You are going to read a passage about the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
3a. Match the headings (A - G) with the appropriate paragraph. The first heading has been done as an
example. There are TWO headings which you do not need.
THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE
Example: G. Attractive and practical
Once called “the bridge that couldn’t be built”, the Golden Gate Bridge is a wonder of the modern world. This magnificent
suspension bridge (a bridge supported from above by thick cables) is perhaps the most famous tourist attraction in California
and connects the city of San Francisco with Marin County on the other side of San Francisco Bay. It is one of the most beautiful
bridges in the world, and until 1993, it was also the tallest. Before its construction, San Francisco could only be reached by ferry,
a situation which was very inconvenient for the people who lived there. Today, over 40 million cars cross the bridge each year!
1.
Although ideas for a bridge across San Francisco Bay had been around since the late 1800s, serious planning and designing
only began in 1929, when Joseph Strauss was made chief engineer on the bridge project. However, he had never built such a
large suspension bridge before, so he asked a number of experienced engineers, architects and geologists to help him with the
design. For example, Charles Alton Ellis was the engineer responsible for most of the technical work, while the art deco style
and easily recognisable orange colour of the bridge were proposed by the architects Irving and Gertrude Morrow.
2.
Getting the project started was not at all easy. First of all, building the bridge was going to cost a lot of money, and secondly,
there were organisations and people who did not really want a bridge to be built across San Francisco Bay. One of the main
opponents of the project was the US Navy, who wrongly believed that a bridge would create problems for ships leaving and
entering the bay. The organisation which owned the ferries that crossed the bay was also against the idea because it believed
that the bridge would affect its business negatively. What’s more, many experts thought it would be impossible to build such
a long suspension bridge.
3.
Nevertheless, work on the bridge eventually began in 1933. Joseph Strauss, who was in charge of the whole project, insisted
on strict safety measures. So, a safety net, which saved the lives of nineteen workers, was placed underneath the bridge from
one end to the other. The builders who worked on the bridge were among the first construction workers ever to wear hard hats
and special goggles. They were also given hand and face cream to protect their skin from the strong winds. In 1937, people were
allowed to walk across the bridge for the first time and it was opened to vehicles one year later. The Golden Gate Bridge was
finished ahead of schedule and, amazingly, cost much less than its designers had originally expected.
4.
On May 24th, 1987, hundreds of thousands of people gathered at the bridge to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The organisers
of the anniversary celebrations expected around 50,000 people, but almost 500,000 turned up. The enormous weight of all
the people crossing the bridge caused the central section of the bridge to bend 3 metres downwards towards the sea. Things
became worse as there was also a strong wind blowing that day, and the roadway started to move from side to side. People
started panicking and running off the bridge as quickly as they could. However, engineers say the bridge would never have fallen
down because suspension bridges are built to bend upwards and downwards, as well as move from side to side.

3. You are going to read an article about a mountain. Read the article carefully and answer
the questions that follow.
CLIMBING MT KILIMANJARO
Mt Kilimanjaro is located inside the Kilimanjaro National Park, in northern Tanzania. It is the highest mountain in Africa and its
peak is covered in snow and ice all year round. The lower parts of the mountain are surrounded by thick jungle, where a lot of
wild animals live.
Tanzania is very close to the equator, the imaginary line that divides the Earth into the northern and southern hemispheres. Due
to its location, Tanzania does not have a hot summer and a cold winter; instead, it has a dry season and a wet season. In fact,
there are two wet periods, one from March to May and another in November. The best time to climb Mt Kilimanjaro is during the
driest months of the year, between July and September, when there are clear days. However, because of its great height, Mt
Kilimanjaro creates its own weather, which is unpredictable. It can be clear and sunny one minute, and cloudy and raining the
next. Therefore, no matter when you climb, you should always be prepared for wet days and cold nights.
Kilimanjaro was first climbed by Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller in 1889. Meyer had attempted to climb it two years
earlier, but he failed because he did not have the proper equipment. He made a second attempt in 1888, but this was also
unsuccessful. Today, approximately 40,000 people try to climb the mountain every year. About half of them fail mostly because,
due to their inexperience, they make the mistake to take the short route and rush to complete the climb without giving their
bodies time to get used to the low oxygen levels on the mountain. The safest way to climb is to take your time and use one of
the longer routes. Further advantages of these are that the scenery along the way takes your breath away and you don’t need
to be an experienced climber or have special equipment to get up them.
Getting to the top of Kilimanjaro is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many climbers. Nevertheless, while thousands
of people climb it successfully, a small number unfortunately die on the mountain every year. Consequently, it is important to
do your research and educate yourself on all the difficulties and dangers you may come across during the climb. You will be on
the mountain for at least 5 or 6 days, so you must be fully prepared, both physically and mentally, for your expedition.
You also need to hire an experienced guide and support team to accompany you, as they will know what actions to take in order
to ensure your health and safety. According to Tanzanian law, you must have a guide and at least two porters (luggage carriers)
with you on the mountain, even if you wish to climb it alone. There is a very good reason for this law, since there are numerous
routes and paths up the mountain, many of which are dangerous, and only the guides are familiar with the ones that are safe to
use. In addition, climbers have to bring their own tents, food and cooking equipment with them as there are very few facilities
on the mountain, so a support team is essential.

3. You are doing research for a class presentation and find this article about tigers.
Read the article carefully and answer the questions that follow.
WILD TIGERS
Tigers are the largest of all the wild cats and are well known for their power and strength. They live alone and aggressively
defend the large areas of land they inhabit. They are excellent hunters and travel many miles to find prey, such as deer,
buffalo and wild pigs, usually at night. They stalk their prey, which is to say they patiently lie in wait, and slowly but
surely approach their victims close enough to attack them with a sudden, deadly jump. Despite their terrifying reputation,
most tigers avoid humans. However, a few may occasionally become dangerous man-eaters; these animals are often sick,
unable to hunt normally, or live in areas where their traditional prey has vanished.
Not so long ago, there were nine tiger subspecies, but three of these became extinct during the 20th century. Over the
last 100 years, hunting and forest destruction by humans have reduced global wild tiger populations from approximately
100,000 to between 4,000 and 6,000. According to a study sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the global wild
tiger population reached a record low of around 3,200 animals in 2010. The distressing results of the study led countries
where tigers are found to begin implementing conservation programmes that aim to double the number of tigers living in
the wild. (A)
Like all wild tigers, Siberian tigers were also on the road to extinction in the 20th century. However, a number of the
conservation programmes that have been established are making every effort to save this tiger subspecies and, since the
early 2000s, their numbers have nearly doubled, now counting almost 600. These tigers live in the vast, frozen forests of
eastern Russia, northern China and Korea, where the extreme weather conditions make it ideal for them as hardly any
humans live there. (B) Also, due to their size and power, they have no predators in their natural habitat. Unfortunately,
though, Siberian tigers are still hunted for their skin and body parts, which are often used in traditional Chinese medicine.
Another success story, similar to that of the Siberian tiger, is about the Bengal tigers inhabiting Nepal, a mountainous
country in southern Asia. (C) In fact, according to the results of Nepal’s most recent tiger survey, there are now an estimated
250 wild tigers in the country, nearly twice the number recorded in 2010. The survey covered a route more than 2,700 km
long, including protected areas along the border between Nepal and India. These areas are an important ecosystem that’s
also home to rhinos, elephants and nearly seven million people. The Bengal tiger is found mainly in India
and it is the most numerous of all tiger subspecies with more than 2,500 left in the wild. (D) Because of
its beauty, as well as its cultural and religious significance, the Bengal tiger is the national animal of
India and Bangladesh.
These two cases are major accomplishments for tiger conservation programmes. Nevertheless,
it is essential that all key tiger habitats be constantly surveyed, protected and expanded so
as to ensure this species’ complete recovery and long-term survival.
