INTRODUCTION
Storytelling is an effective teaching and learning activity to help improve the
standard of English among pupils. The interactive art of storytelling involves
revealing the details of a story while provoking the imagination of the audience.
Stories are told as a means of entertainment, cultural preservation or instilling
moral values.

OBJECTIVES
2.1
To enhance pupils’ confidence in using English.
2.2
To give pupils the opportunity to use English in an interesting, authentic and
creative manner.
2.3
To enhance and improve listening and speaking skills.
2.4
To instill pupils’ interest in reading and writing in English.
RULES AND REGULATIONS
3.1
The competition is open to all Year 4 to Year 6 pupils from governmentaided schools. Only ONE contestant will represent his / her state at the
national level.
3.2
The winners from the previous year may participate in the current year but
the text and presentation must not be an exact replica.
3.3
The competition is divided into two sections:
Section 1
Section 2

: Prepared (any story)
: Impromptu (state and national level only)
For Section 1, contestants are to observe the following rules:
3.4.1 Stories presented can be authentic, adapted or originally written.
3.4.2 Stories presented must not touch on sensitive issues such as race,
religion, stereotyping, politics, etc.
3.4.3 Stories must be thematically educational.
3.4.4 Props, backdrops and sound effects are not allowed. Any use of
these will allow for disqualification by the judges.
3.4.5 Time allocated to present the story is 4 to 5 minutes.

3.5
For Section 2, contestants are to observe the following rules:
3.5.1 Each contestant will get their turn to present their impromptu story.
3.5.2 Each contestant will choose an envelope containing a card. The chief
judge will read aloud the word/phrase or show the picture to the
contestant.
3.5.3 After 30 seconds, contestants tell their story based on the
word/phrase or picture given.
3.5.4 Stories told in Section 2 should not be a repetition or reproduction of
any story presented in Section 1. Contestants will be disqualified if
they do so.
3.5.5 Any inclusion of singing should enhance and not dominate the
presentation.
3.5.6 Time allocated to present the impromptu story is 2 to 3 minutes. The
warning bell will be rung once at the 3rd minute. Marks will be
deducted thereafter.
3.6
Infringement
3.6.1 A maximum of 10 marks will be deducted if a contestant:

touches on sensitive issues such as race, religion, politics, etc.

presents a story below the stipulated time – 2 marks for every
minute
presents a story above the stipulated time – 2 marks for every
minute
uses props, backdrops and electronically-aided sound effects –
2 marks
overdramatizing – 2 marks
A contestant will be disqualified if:
3.7.1 he / she reads or refers to notes / reading materials.
3.7.2 he / she is prompted by another person.
3.7.3 he / she repeats any story presented in Section 1 during the
impromptu session.

ADJUDICATION
4.1
The competition at the national level will be judged by a panel of 5 judges,
appointed by the Sports, Co-curricular and Arts Division, Ministry of
Education Malaysia.
4.2
Points will be allocated according to the scoresheet.
4.3
The contestant with the majority of votes will be declared the winner.
4.4
The decision of the judges is final. No appeal is allowed.
4.5
Individual marks will not be disclosed.
PRIZES
5.1
Prizes are awarded as follows:● Champion
● Second Prize winner
● Third Prize winner
● Fourth Placing
● Fifth Placing
5.2
Trophies and certificates of achievement will be awarded to the champion,
second and third prize winners. A certificate of achievement will be awarded
to the fourth and fifth placing. Certificates of participation will be awarded to
all participants.
EXCEPTION
All matters not stated in the concept paper or any exclusion to the rules and all
other unexpected matters and issues on interpretation will be decided by the
organising committee of the competition.

*This concept paper is valid for 2024 until further notification or revision from the Ministry of Education
Malaysia and can be used at all levels for competitions organized by the Ministry. The competition
will abide to the above rules ONLY.
