Are you a part of an industrial engineering undergrad program? Do you want to become a
professional engineer? Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is the first step in
securing your Professional Engineering (PE) license. Read on for some valuable tips that can
help you ace the FE Industrial exam on your first attempt.
About the Examination
The FE exam for industrial engineers is essentially the first challenge in your path to gaining a
PE licensure. The NCEES administers the FE Industrial exam year-round at approved Pearson
VUE test centers.
The FE exam is 6-hours long and includes 110 questions. The exam appointment time can be
divided into:
 Nondisclosure agreement (2-minutes)
 Tutorial (8-minutes)
 Exam (5-hours 20-minutes)
 Optional scheduled break (25-minutes)
You can register for the FE exam by logging into your MyNCEES account and following the
instructions onscreen.
Eligibility criteria
Students in their final year of the EAC/ABET-accredited undergrad engineering program or
recent graduates can appear for the FE exam. Unlike the PE exam, work experience is not
mandatory to take the FE exam.
What is the Ideal Time to Take the FE Exam?
Appearing for the FE exam as early as you are eligible is a smart career choice. Because the
concepts will still be fresh in your mind, and it will be easier to recall basic engineering concepts
and pass the exam. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to pass the FE exam. So, do not
