and graphics can be transmitted to any corner of the world. b. The basic organization of a computer system can be understood with the
help of a block diagram given below: i. Input Unit: Whatever data we enter into the computer is called input.
The data or instruction entered with the help of different Input devices
is accepted by the input unit that converts them into the acceptable
form and supplied to the computer system for further processing.

ii. System Unit: The box like case stands near or placed under the
monitor is called system unit. Inside the system unit the processing is
completed for the data entered to convert it into information through
a processor with the help of a CPU.
iii. After the processing, the information is displayed for the user with the
help of output unit like monitor or printer.
iv. The process of saving data and information for future use is performed
with the help of different storage devices like hard disk, CD-ROM or a
pen drive.
c. A touch screen is a touch-sensitive display device. Users can interact with
touch screens by touching areas of the screen. You can touch words,
pictures, numbers, letters, or locations identified on the screen. Windows
8 operating system provides increased support for computers with touch
screens.

i. A wireless keyboard is a battery-powered device that transmits data to
the system unit using wireless technology.
ii. Mobile computer keyboard is built in the top of the system unit. These
keyboards usually are smaller and have fewer keys than desktop
computer keyboards. These are mainly used on notebook computers
and some handheld computers, smart phones, and other mobiles.
iii. An optical mouse uses laser technology to compare and track the
position of the mouse, rather than a ball and rollers used on a
mechanical mouse.
iv. A microphone is a voice input device that is used to send our voice
commands in the computer.

system unit. It is the most important part of the computer system and
also called a computer case. System units are available in a variety of
shapes and sizes.
vi. A Pen drive is a small and portable storage device popularly used these
days. It is used to quickly transfer audio, video and data files from the

pocket.
e. CPU (Central Processing Unit) is a processor, some time called
microprocessor. It is the brain of the computer that does all of the
calculations, and runs all the programs. It manages all of the operations
and carries out the basic instructions which operate a computer.

f. Differentiate between:
i. Data and Information
Data:
a. Facts, statistics used for reference or analysis.
b. Numbers, characters, symbols, images etc., which can be
processed by a computer.
c. Data must be interpreted, by a human or machine, to derive
meaning.
Information:
a. Knowledge derived from study, experience (by the senses), or
instruction.
b. “Information is any kind of knowledge that is exchangeable
amongst people, about things, facts, concepts, etc., in some context.
ii. Hardware is any physical device, something that you are able to touch
and software is a collection of instructions and codes installed into
the computer and cannot be touched. Hardware and software are
complementary of each other. A computer’s hardware is of no use
without software and software cannot be utilized without supporting
hardware.
iii. Input and output devices are computer hardware components. An
input device is a component used to enter data or instructions into the
computer. Keyboard, mouse, scanner, etc. are input devices. An output
device gives processed information back to the user. You can view,
print and hear the output generated by computers using different
output devices. Monitor, printer, speakers, etc. are output devices.
iv. RAM (Random Access Memory) is made up of memory chips that can
be read from and written by the CPU and other devices. RAM is volatile,
so data stored in RAM stays there only as long as your computer is
running. ROM (Read Only Memory) is a type of memory that normally
can be read only. ROM is non-volatile, so the data stored in ROM is
always there, whether the power is On or not.
v. Scanner is an input device that is used to enter images of text, drawing
and photographs and store them in the computer as electronic files.
There are three types of scanners: flatbed scanners, hand-held
scanners and drum scanners. Plotter is an output device that is used
for printing extensively in the drafting field by architects, engineers.
etc. There are two types of plotters available; flatbed and drum.
vi. A dot-matrix is an impact printer that uses hammers and a ribbon to
form images out of dots. The more dot hammers used, the higher the

resolution of the printed image. A laser is a non impact high-speed
printer that works like a photocopier to produce high-quality images
on a page.
vii. A CD-R (compact disc-recordable) is a multi session compact disc on which you can record your own items such as text, graphics, and audio
but only for one time, and you cannot erase the disc’s contents. A
CD-RW (CD-REWRITABLE) is an erasable disc that allows you to write
multiple times.
viii. A hard disk is a storage device that is used to store data for future use.
It is mounted inside the system unit sometimes called a fixed disk. The
system unit on most desktop and notebook computers contains at
least one hard disk. A Pen drive is a small and portable storage device
popularly used these days. It is used to quickly transfer audio, video
and data files from the hard drive of one computer to another. It is
small enough to fit into a pocket.
g. The power supply unit, called SMPS (Switched-Mode Power Supply) is
the component of the system unit that converts the wall outlet AC power
into DC power. Different motherboards and computers require different
wattages on the power supply. If a power supply is not providing the
necessary power, the computer will not function properly. Built into the
power supply is a fan that keeps the power supply cool.

a. Operating System is a software that controls the overall activity of a
computer and enables all the parts to function collectively. For example,
the operating system recognizes input from an input device such as
the keyboard, mouse, microphone, or PC camera; coordinates the
display of output on the monitor; instructs a printer how and when to
print information; and manages data and instructions in memory and
information stored on disk. The operating system (OS) is the first thing
loaded onto the computer, without the operating system a computer is
useless.

b. Earlier the operating system was device dependent. A device-dependent
software product is one that runs only on a specific type of computer.
Now the device-independent operating system has come that can
run on computers made by various manufacturers. The advantage of
device-independent operating system is that you can retain the existing
application software and data files even if you change the model of a
computer.
c. Jobs of OS.
i. Booting a Computer: The main job of an operating system is starting
a computer. Starting or restarting the process of a computer is called
booting. Each time you boot a computer, the necessary operating
system files are loaded, or copied from the hard disk (storage) to the
computer’s memory (RAM). Finally, the Windows desktop and icons
are displayed on the screen.
ii. Managing Resources: The operating system helps in managing various
resources of the computer system. It keeps the track of all the files
and folders and also maintains a list of these files and folders into the
hard disk.
iii. Scheduling Tasks: A task is an activity or operation that a processor
performs. The operating system determines the order in which the
tasks are to be processed. These tasks include receiving data from
an input device, processing instructions, sending information to an
output device and transferring items from storage to memory and
from memory to storage.
iv. User Interface: The operating system plays an important role for
interfacing between the user and computer. The user interacts with
the computer to perform various tasks like running the application
programs, opening the document, entering the data, printing the
output reports etc. The OS makes it easy for the user to perform all
these tasks with the help of different hardware devices.
d. Types of OS
i. Single User Single Task Operating System: A single user single task
operating system is designed for one user to effectively use a computer
at a time and allows only one program to run at a time.
ii. Single User Multitasking Operating System: It is the operating system
that allows a single user to run different applications at the same
time. Microsoft Windows and Macintosh of Apple are examples of
this type.
iii. Multi User Operating System: This type of operating system allows

multi users to use the system simultaneously. These types of operating
systems are mostly used by the network system. UNIX and Windows
NT are examples of multi-user types of operating system.
iv. Batch Processing Operating System (BPOS): In Batch Processing
Operating System, the data and programs that need to be processed
are bundled and collected in a ‘batch’ and executed together. This
operating system is ideal in situations where a large amount of
data is to be processed or similar data needs to be processed.
In it the processing is performed automatically without any user
intervention.
v. Real-Time Operating System (RTOS): A real-time operating system
(RTOS) is an operating system that guarantees a certain capability
within a specified time period. It is specially designed to run
applications with very precise timing and a high degree of reliability. A real-time operating system offers programmers more control over
process priorities.
e. The three basic categories of operating systems are stand-alone, server,
and embedded.
i. A stand-alone operating system is a complete operating system
that works on a desktop computer, notebook computer, or mobile
computing device. Examples of currently used stand-alone operating
systems are Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, and Linux.
ii. A server operating system is an operating system that is designed
specifically to support a network. A server operating system typically
resides on a server. The client computers on the network rely on the
server(s) for resources. Examples of server operating systems include
Windows Server 2008, UNIX, Solaris, and NetWare.
iii. Embedded operating system is used on mobile devices and many
consumer electronics. It resides on a ROM chip. Popular embedded
operating systems today include Windows Embedded CE, Windows
Mobile, Palm OS, iPhone OS, BlackBerry, Google Android, embedded
Linux, and Symbian OS.

I will help my father by running the Disk Cleanup program. It is used to remove
temp files and files that are no longer needed. It helps to free up space on the
computer’s hard drive.

b. A scan disk is used to detect and repair hard disk errors, fixes file allocation
table errors and reconstructs some damaged information. It searches and
removes unnecessary files from the computer. By performing scan disk,
the performance of the computer can be increased.

c. By deleting all temp and unnecessary files from the PCs you will free
up space on the computer’s hard drive and increase the speed and
performance of the computer.
d. Defragmentation is a program that rearranges the files stored in a logical
order for occupying the attached storage location to increase the speed
of the computer. With time your hard disk becomes fragmented and
bloated with obsolete and invalid data that causes errors, slowdowns
and freezing of your system. To overcome this problem defragment your
computer hard disk. You should defragment the hard disk at least once a
month.
e. You can make a USB recovery drive to troubleshoot and recover from
computer problems. If a problem prevents you from booting your
computer, then you must boot with your Windows 8 installation media.
If you do not have the installation media, you can still recover if you have
created a recovery drive.
f. You can create a system image backup to protect against your system
hard drive failing or otherwise becoming unusable. If the computer
crashes you have to start from scratch with either a reformatted hard
drive or a new hard drive. This usually means that you have to reinstall
Windows 8 and then reinstall all your applications. However, if you create
a system image backup, you can restore your system quickly and easily.

size, and colour of characters; apply special effects and organize text in
newspaper-style columns.
b. A font is a style of writing text within a document. A word 2010 provides
variety of fonts to make the text look better. Arial, Times New Roman,
Calibri, Helvetica, etc. are some of the fonts available in Word.
c. Alignment is the arrangement of text relative to a margin. Align Left,
Center, Align Right and Justify are the four different alignments in which
the text can be arranged.
d. You can add a Clip Art in the document to make it more interesting and
entertaining. You can use the WordArt to give impressive titles to a
document.
e. The table in Word consists of a grid of boxes arranged in rows and columns,
somewhat like a spreadsheet. The table option inbuilt with the MS Word
program is a useful formatting tool, which allows you to easily insert rows
and columns. You use tables to format all or part of your document into
columns and rows. The table can be implementing in Word document by
using the Table button from the Insert tab.

a. Microsoft Excel 2010 is an electronic spreadsheet program that helps you
to enter numerical values or data into rows or columns. You can use these
numerical entries for such things as calculations, graphs and statistical
analysis.
b. We have seen that a document in Microsoft Excel is made of one or more
worksheets. In reality, a document in Microsoft Excel is called a workbook.
In other words, a workbook is the group of worksheets that belong to
the same document. This also means that when you start a document in
Microsoft Excel, you actually start a workbook.
c. Moving data allows you to re-organize data in your worksheet. When
you move data, the data disappears from its original location. Copying
data allows you to repeat data in your worksheet without having to
retype it. When you copy data, it appears in both the original and new
locations.
d. You need to change the row heights or column widths in your worksheets
to improve the readability and appearance of data for e.g. if your
worksheet contains many numbers, you can widen the column to make
the worksheet less cluttered. The default column width of a cell is 8.43
points and row height is 12.75 points.

e. A workbook is a collection of different worksheets. A worksheet is a single
page or a sheet in Excel also called spreadsheet. By default there are three
worksheets present in an Excel workbook.
f. Define the following:
i. The ribbon is the control center in Excel which consists of tabs, groups,
and commands. Each tab contains a collection of groups, and each
group contains related commands.
ii. The worksheet is organized into a rectangular grid containing vertical
columns and horizontal rows. It is a single page or sheet in Excel also
called spreadsheet. By default there are three worksheets present in
an Excel workbook.
iii. The currently selected cell is active cell. Whatever data is entered is
displayed in the active cell. An active cell is highlighted with a black
border around it.
iv. The horizontal or vertical bar that is used to move the worksheet up,
down, right or left are the scroll bars.
v. Vertical and horizontal lines that divide the sheet into rows and
columns are the Gridlines.
g. To work on any tasks like editing or formatting first you have to select a
cell in Excel. A cell or a range of cells can be selected by simply dragging
and clicking the mouse on the cells or holding down the shift key and
pressing the arrow keys. The selected cells get highlighted with the dark
border around it.

do not open the attachment. Here the term ‘stranger’ is used for a person,
