MATH 6 FRACTIONS NAME: _____________________________ Hi Grade 6! How was your short break? I hope you were able to rest well. For this week, we will continue with our lessons on fractions. We will start with Addition and Subtraction of Similar and Dissimilar Fractions. We would also start using your book Realistic Math: Scaling Greater Heights. Let’s begin! LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. Differentiate similar and dissimilar fractions. 2. Add and Subtract similar and dissimilar fractions. RECALL Icon made by Freepik from www.flaticon.com MATH 6 PAGE 1 MATH 6 FRACTIONS Let’s look at the table below: SIMILAR FRACTIONS 1 5 4 9 , , 2 5 5 9 , , 3 5 6 9 , , DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS 4 1 5 2 7 2 9 3 4 , , , 5 5 7 3 6 1 , 8 , , 7 9 9 12 Review the set of fractions under similar fractions. What do you notice? How about the set of fractions the under dissimilar fractions? __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ SIMILAR FRACTIONS SIMILAR FRACTIONS are fractions with the same denominators. 1 5 DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS Are fractions with different denominators. 5 , 3 5 , 4 5 DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS 1 2 MATH 6 , 2 , 4 5 , 3 6 , 7 9 PAGE 2 ADDITION/SUBTRACTION OF SIMILAR FRACTIONS SIMILAR FRACTIONS To ADD and SUBTRACT Similar Fractions: 1. ADD/SUBTRACT the NUMERATOR 2. COPY the DENOMINATOR EXAMPLE 1 12 7 19 + = 25 25 25 12 7 1. ADD/SUBTRACT the NUMERATOR 19 + = 25 25 25 2. COPY the DENOMINATOR EXAMPLE 2 35 18 17 = 40 40 40 35 18 17 = 40 40 40 MATH 6 1. ADD/SUBTRACT the NUMERATOR 2. COPY the DENOMINATOR PAGE 3 MATH 6 ADDITION/SUBTRACTION OF SIMILAR FRACTIONS EXAMPLE 3 3 3 24 + 5 36 24 + 5 36 1 36 1 36 = = 8 8 25 1. ADD/SUBTRACT whole number. 36 25 2. ADD/SUBTRACT fractions. 36 EXAMPLE 4 3 18 + 9 18 = 3 + 18 9 = 12 18 When adding and subtracting fractions, all answers must be SIMPLIFIED or REDUCED TO LOWEST TERM Let’s review how to simplify fractions. 12 ÷ 18 ÷ 12 18 6 of 2 GCF 12 and = 18=6 6 3 ÷ 6 2 ÷ 6 = 1. Find GCF of 12 and 18. 2. Divide fractions by the GCF. 3 LET’S PRACTICE ON THE NEXT PAGE! MATH 6 PAGE 4 ADDITION/SUBTRACTION OF SIMILAR FRACTIONS 17 55 67 84 54 120 32 72 96 19 + 55 18 - 84 + 3 = = 18 120 - 14 8 - 22 96 + 1 8 + 10 120 = = 10 96 = How did you find the exercises?____________ END OF DAY 1 MATH 6 PAGE 5 MATH 6 ADDITION/SUBTRACTION OF DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS Welcome to Day 2. Now, let’s learn how to add or subtract DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS. METHOD 1: USING THE LCM (LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE) 12 ÷ 4 = 3 3x1=3 1 4 + 2 6 = 1. Find the LCM 2. Divide the LCM by the denominator of each fraction Then multiply the quotient and the numerator.. 3. Simplify your answer if possible. 12 ÷ 6 = 2 2x2=4 3 + 4 12 = 7 12 LCM of 4 and 6 = 12 12 ÷ 4 = 3 3x1=3 7 12 ÷ 6 = 2 2x2=4 Is already in its simplest form. 12 MATH 6 PAGE 6 ADDITION/SUBTRACTION OF DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS METHOD 2: TEACHER ANDREI’S METHOD ☺ 1. Multiply the denominators of the fraction and write it as such → (4) x (6) 6 1 4 2 + 6 = + 8 (6 X 1) + (4 x 2) = (4) x (6) 14 ÷ 2 24 ÷ 2 14 ÷ 2 24 ÷ 2 2. Cross-multiply the denominator and numerator 6 1 4 2 + 6 = + 8 (6 X 1) + (4 x 2) (4) x (6) = 3. Solve and simplify. 6 1 4 + 2 6 = + 8 (6 X 1) + (4 x 2) (4) x (6) = 14 ÷ 2 24 ÷ 2 = 7 12 You can use the method that you find easier, You will arrive with the same answer! On the next pages are more examples. MATH 6 PAGE 7 MATH 6 ADDITION/SUBTRACTION OF DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS EXAMPLE 1 40 ÷ 5 = 8 8 x 2 = 16 METHOD 1 2 LCM METHOD 5 1 - 16 = 8 40 ÷ 8 = 5 5x1=5 - 2 MY METHOD 5 1 - (8 x 2) - = 8 - 9 = 40 16 METHOD 2 5 40 5 (5 x 1) 9 = (5) x (8) 40 EXAMPLE 2 For mixed number, we will just add/subtract the whole number and follow the rules for dissimilar fraction. 3 7 10 1 + 5 = 2 10 ÷ 10 = 1 1x3=3 3 10 + 1 2 = 3 10 + 1 2 = + 5 + 5 = 8 ÷ 2 10 ÷ 2 16 ÷ 4 20 ÷ 4 12 = = 4 5 10 (3 x 2) + (10 x 1) (10) x (2) 12 MATH 6 + 10 ÷ 2 = 5 5x1=5 10 6 3 7 = = 4 5 4 5 PAGE 8 ADDITION/SUBTRACTION OF SIMILAR FRACTIONS 25 30 12 16 + + 63 - 72 55 5 8 6 7 + 3 12 4 12 9 81 - 23 3 4 + 5 6 = = 5 42 - = 1 6 = How did you find the exercises?____________ END OF DAY 2 MATH 6 PAGE 9
