FRACTIONS
NAME: _____________________________
Hi Grade 6! How was your short break? I hope you were able to rest well.
For this week, we will continue with our lessons on fractions. We will start
with Addition and Subtraction of Similar and Dissimilar Fractions.
We would also start using your book Realistic Math: Scaling Greater Heights.
Let’s begin!
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Differentiate similar and dissimilar fractions.
2. Add and Subtract similar and dissimilar fractions.

MATH 6
ADDITION/SUBTRACTION OF DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS
DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS
Welcome to Day 2. Now, let’s
learn how to add or subtract
DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS.
METHOD 1: USING THE LCM (LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE)
12 ÷ 4 = 3
3x1=3
1
4
+
2
6
=
1. Find the LCM
2. Divide the LCM by the
denominator of each fraction
Then multiply the quotient and
the numerator..
3. Simplify your answer if
possible.
12 ÷ 6 = 2
2x2=4
3
+
4
12
=
7
12
LCM of 4 and 6 = 12
12 ÷ 4 = 3
3x1=3
7
12 ÷ 6 = 2
2x2=4
Is already in its simplest form.

METHOD 2: TEACHER ANDREI’S METHOD ☺
1. Multiply the denominators of the
fraction and write it as such →
(4) x (6)
6
1

(6 X 1) + (4 x 2)
=
(4) x (6)

2. Cross-multiply the denominator and numerator

(6 X 1) + (4 x 2)
(4) x (6)

You can use the method that you find easier, You will arrive with
the same answer! On the next pages are more examples.
