OVERVIEW
overview
Lesson prep
Foster students’ self-reflection skills, critical thinking, and
development of personal values with this journey reflection
activity. In this one (or two) day activity students will investigate
quotations about journeys, reflect on their own journey, and
complete a personal journey poster. In doing so, students will
look back at their school year, process their triumphs and
stumbles, and develop understanding of their personal schoolyear journey.
• Assemble class set of journey packets: Overview page,
Quotation Investigation (include two copies), School Year
Journey Brainstorm
• Quotes cut into individual pieces (one for each student)
• White paper that students will create quote posters on
• Art supplies (to make quote posters): colored paper,
scrapbook paper, markers, ribbon, stickers…and other artsy
stuff
• Class set of the “My School Year Journey” poster pages
Overview:
• Distribute the journey packets to students.
• Review the overview page.
instruction
Quotation Investigation:
• Pass out a quote and white piece of paper to each student.
• Explain that they should re-write the quote on the “Quotation
Investigation” worksheet in their packets. Review the rating
system. Give students an opportunity to add any comments.
• Then, explain to students that they will be creating a large
poster for their quote on the white paper.
• Encourage them to write big and neatly. Give students a
chance to make creative, decorative quote posters.
• Once all posters are complete, have students hang them
around the perimeter of the room.
• Explain that students must rotate around the room, read and
copy each quote onto the investigation worksheet, rate the
quotes, and add comments.
• When complete, have students “star” their favorite quote.
• Possible Extension – Have students share their favorite quote
with a partner, small group, or the entire class.

Self-Reflection
• Have students open to the “School Year Journey Brainstorm”
page in their packets.
• Lead students through each question. Encourage students to be
thoughtful in their responses.
• Then, distribute the “My School Year Journey” templates. Have
students use their responses to complete the template. They
should add their favorite journey quote to the top of the
template.
• Share/collect/display.
• To make this a one-day lesson, limit the number of quotes that
students investigate to 10 (rather than 20) and consider skipping
the poster making. Instead students could simply pass the quotes
to ten other people around the classroom or review them in small
groups.
• If your students make the journey quote posters, they make great
bulletin board displays, classroom decoration, or even as school
start décor (for the next school year).
• This activity is part of the Journeys Project – a CCSS-Intensive,
Multi-Unit Project centered around the theme of incredible
journeys (perfect for end-of-year instruction, summer school, or
school start).

The path to our destination is not always a

Overview
Life’s a journey, not a destination.
Steven Tyler
Each school year brings new triumphs, changes, setbacks, challenges,
successes, people and experiences…and now it is time to reflect. You’ve
probably heard the expression, “Life’s a journey, not a destination.” If that’s
true, then it’s super important to reflect on your personal journey through
this school year.
Let’s take a moment to reflect on your school year journey.
In this reflection activity you will investigate famous quotes about journeys,
complete a reflection about this year, and create a
review of your personal journey.
