Animal Farm - Chapter Four Summary
The Battle of the Cowshed serves as a potent event in Animal Farm, advancing
the plot, strengthening existing relationships and tormenting broken ones. It was late in
the summer and the animals have controlled the farm for some time, whilst Mr. Jones
frequently visits the Red Lion pub to cope with his loss. During this time, rumours of the
animals’ rebellion spread across the country, instilling fear into farmers of the newfound
threat. To put rest to these claims the neighbouring farmers spread propaganda of the
hardships of the newly established Animal Farm which has already led to cannibalism.
Anticipated by Snowball, Jones, with support from men from Pinchfield and
Foxwood, attempts to recapture the farm, known as the Battle of the Cowshed.
Snowball, an extraordinary tactician, leads the defence, while unsurprisingly, Napoleon
and Mollie are absent. Orwell’s gruesome diction helps readers to illustrate the long,
bloody battle seen in phrase, “The pellets scored bloody streaks along Snowball’s back.”
The animals defeat Jones and his men, with Boxer delivering a decisive blow to a stablelad, though he is horrified at the thought of killing him. Snowball is injured by Jones'
gunfire, but the animals emerge victorious and the farm continues to operate without
human presence.
The battle is commemorated by setting up Jones's abandoned gun as a
monument at the foot of the flagstaff, marking the anniversary of the Rebellion on
October 12th. Snowball and Napoleon decide to send pigeons to spread news of the
rebellion of Animal Farm to incite rebellions elsewhere in hopes to make Old Major’s
dream a reality.
Animal Farm – Character Descriptions
Snowball is a central figure in Chapter four, showcasing his strategic prowess and
leadership abilities. As one of the key leaders of Animal Farm, Snowball takes on the
role of organizing the farm's defence against Jones and his men. He devises a tactical
plan, inspired by military strategies, positioning the animals for a successful defence
during the Battle of the Cowshed. His bravery and quick thinking are evident as he leads
the charge, even getting injured in the process. Snowball's actions during the battle not
only highlight his commitment to the animal cause but also establish him as a capable
and courageous leader. However, his opinionated approach to war, evidenced by his
statement, "The only good human being is a dead one," contrasts with the
compassionate perspectives of other animals such as Boxer.
Boxer, the loyal and hardworking cart-horse, is portrayed as both a physical
powerhouse and a figure of deep compassion in Chapter four. During the Battle of the
Cowshed, Boxer plays a crucial role in the animals' victory, using his immense strength
to fend off the attackers. His decisive blow to a stable-lad demonstrates his raw power,
but his immediate remorse and horror at the thought of having killed the man reveals
his gentle nature. Boxer's distress and his earnest wish to have not caused harm to the
young man underscore his fundamental kindness and moral integrity.
