April 6th Lec - - - - - - - - Empiricism: o The old knowledge comes through the senses. o Contrast with Plato’s philosophy. o We don’t get the entire knowledge through the senses. Perception is a problem solver through the senses. o Your brain constructs reality from the senses, so our reality isn’t true. Psychophysics: o A branch of psychology o Study the relationship between physical reality and its experiences of it. o The relationship isn’t linear Introspection of consciousness scientifically: o Others report their conscious experiences o Wundt’s experiment failed o The only problem is you can’t look into others’ consciousness. Structuralism: o Studying structures of the mind. o Break down consciousnesses and put the puzzle together like chemistry. Functionalism: o What the mind does o Stemmed from evolutionary theory. o Everything in the mind is there for a reason o It’s limited because some features’ functions are unexpected. Gestalt psychology: o The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Behaviorism: o The environment controls the behaviors. o Predict and control behaviors. o The mind isn’t the most important part. Individual differences: o Intelligence is something that can be measured and passed down o Aligned with selective breeding. Psychology developed IQ tests to determine intelligence.
