Are you looking for ways to integrate
reading, creative writing, and social
studies?
Do you want to inspire students to be
creative and think outside the box?
With these resources, students
research the meaning of the word
Dystopia, and create Dystopian
societies of their own. Students
practice their creative writing skills
as they describe all of the different
aspects of their societies.
This is an excellent final project or
extension activity to go along with a
Dystopian novel study. It would pair
nicely with The Giver, The Hunger
Games, Divergent, 1984, Brave New
World, or any other dystopian novel.

Create your own Dystopian society. Your
society should have a flag, an educational
system, a government with laws, some kind of
currency, transportation, entertainment, and
employment.
REQUIREMENTS
For this assignment, you are required to
complete the following:

-This must be full color and should clearly state
the name of your society.
Flag

-This will be proudly flown from flagpoles
throughout your society. It should be full color,
and should tell me something important about
your society.
Educational System Information

-How are the people of your society educated? Do
they go to schools? Do they learn information from
their parents? Write a page of information
describing your society’s education system.
Government Information

-What is government like in your society? Who is in
charge? What kind of laws do you have? How are
criminals dealt with? Write a page of information
telling me about the government in your society.
Currency Information

-Is there a need for money in your society? If so,
what do they use for currency? Does everyone have
the same amount of money? Write a page
of information describing the currency in your
society.
Transportation Information

-How do people get around in your society? Do they
walk? Travel by hoverboard? Do you have roads,
train tracks, etc? Tell me about your transportation
systems in a page of information.
Entertainment Information

-What do people do for fun in your society? Explain
their activities in a page of information.
Employment Information

-Do people work in your society? What kind of jobs
do they have? Write a page of information
describing your society’s employment systems.

live together in one big house, or do they live in
family groups? What are the houses like?
