Title
Contents

Vacation Time
Students are to write where their dream vacation is and include 10 items they
would pack for their trip. No other details are given.
10
Something Has Happened
Students learn that they have suddenly awoken on an island. They don’t know
where they are or what happened.
11
Title Page
Students learn the title of this PBL is Island Survival, then (hopefully) they’ll
begin to connect the dots and think about how they can survive.
12
Taking Stock
Students evaluate their top three resources they had brought for their
vacation, deciding how these can help them now.
13
Must Do Now
Students must decide 4 crucial must-do actions that need to happen quickly to
help them survive.
14
Starting a Fire
Students must create fire. They can draw how they did it, including labeling and
writing how they were successful.
15
Build A Shelter
Students must design a makeshift shelter using items on the island.
16
What’s on the Island
Students decide the types of animals, trees, plants, and climate of the island.
17, 18
Landforms And More
Students must pick 8 types of landforms that are on the island, and then draw
what they look like.
19
Water Source
Students must design/create a way to get drinkable water.
20-26
Journal Entries
Students are given prompts and a possibility of writing 13 journal entries about
their experience on the island. These prompts (if completed) flow into later
activities, where students have to access this information they’ve created.
27
Garden Variety
Students design a garden by choosing five vegetables they have found on the
island.
28-33
Animal Research
Students can pick animals (that are on their island) or that they would like to
research. Also included 4 animals for students who may need assistance
coming up with their own choices.
34
The Treehouse
Students design a treehouse to live in.
35
Treehouse Resources
36
Tool Time
37-40
Cartographer
Students decide upon resources, supplies, and tools they have or need to
create.
Students draw illustrations of four tools they have created to help them build a
treehouse and live on the island.
Students will take many of the elements they have chosen and create a larger
scale map of the island. This will be completed on larger paper (butcher block,
poster, or teacher choice).
This map-building will incorporate earlier elements along with other
requirements allowing each students to design their own map.

This project integrates elements of science,
ELA, and social studies into a student-centered PBL that
combines imagination, creativity, and problem solving
skills as they try and survive on an island.
There are 16 activities (1 page for almost each one) for
students to complete. Each page involves a problem or
idea they must solve, recreate, or answer. Pages can
vary from writing, map skills, real-world application,
problem solving, and more.
As students work through each page of the project, they
will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes.
By the end, all students will have completed the project,
but each version will be based on user imagination,
creativity, and knowledge base.
All pages can be geared towards multiple grade levels,
although for some younger students the teacher may
need to give more explicit instructions.
Students may choose to use textbooks, maps,
computers, the Internet, and more to complete each
page. They might even choose to work with a partner,
but ultimately the choice is yours (as the teacher).
There are up to 30 printable pages. Hand them out one
at a time or staple them all together at once. Choose
whichever way works best in your classroom.
©Digital: Divide & Conquer 2017
extension ideas
Many of the pages in this unit can be jump-off points for you (the teacher) to show/teach
students about math skills, critical thinking, technology, ideas, design, and more. Below are
some extension ideas you could apply to this unit.
I like to project the pages on the board as students work through them. Then we (class)
can discuss elements, share ideas, and collaborate with classmates.
Allow students to work in small groups or next to each other and talk a bit. They will build
off of each others ideas and share tips and ideas.
Included is a link to a SYMBALOO page with over 30 direct links to videos, images, maps,
and websites for surviving on an island.

assembly how i do it
I like to print this packet out and make copies with all pages together, that way students
see the entirety of the project. This could be overwhelming for some students (and
teachers), so the choice is up to you.
I suggest copying front and back plus side stapling. This saves a bit of paper and puts the
packet in booklet form. This is sometimes easier than the classic corner staple.

Vacation Time
You are about to embark on a wonderful vacation of a lifetime.
Where would your dream vacation be?

What are ten specific items you will take on vacation?
ITEMS could be clothes, toys, entertainment, or
essential items to make the best vacation ever.

Something has happened
It looks like your dream vacation might have just turned into a
nightmare. Somehow your trip ran into some turbulence along
the way. NOW, you are laying face down in the sand with salty
water splashing against your face.
Where are you?
You remember boarding the plane.
You remember buckling your seat belt.
You even remember taking off.
But NOTHING after that.
Pushing yourself up, you don’t see a single other person around.
The water hitting your face is the tide of the ocean. There’s
sand in your mouth. You are on some kind of island.
Twenty feet away is your luggage with all ten items you packed.
A little farther down the beach are a couple of other bags and a
medical kit.
You don’t see the plane anywhere. You have no idea what
happened. It looks like there is luggage and debris scattered on
land and floating in the water.
DRAW WHAT YOU SEE ON THE BEACH.

The Water Source
You need to find water. There is not a natural spring to
use, so you’ll need to figure out how to capture water
from rainfall and morning dew. This is important.
How are you going to get drinkable water?
Sketch, draw, design, or write exactly what you will do.
Use island elements, your supplies, or creativity to survive.

One day you find a blank journal on the beach. You decide to dry it
out in the sun. Tucked inside the cover were a couple of pencils.
You decide you will keep track of the days and events of your
island survival.
-Complete the journal entries using the prompts provided.
-Use your imagination and knowledge to document your
time trying to survive.

cartographer
A cartographer is a person who creates maps.
These can be of the world, a city, bus routes,
or even buried treasure.
CREATE A MAP of YOUR ISLAND
Now is the time to build a map of your island. You’ve
identified landforms, created a home, and trekked all
across this island.
You will draw and design a large scale map filled with
details you have created or imagined throughout this
project.
On the following page is a checklist to help you with the
creation of the map.
Be detailed and creative with your island. Allow this map
to be a visual story that matches what you have just
completed. This is your island that you have survived on.
Make it yours.
planning
You need to plan your map before you begin.
-Research and study different types of maps.
-Decide if/how you want to create 3D shapes.
-What roles will colors play?
-What size and shape of paper will you use?
-How will you organize it all?
-What elements can you add to this map that will
be different from other students?
