Finding Shelter When Lightning Strikes
There are several things to do to keep safe (0) while lightning strikes. The most important

Grand Canyon National Park
The Grand Canyon National Park is a park in the state of Arizona, United States. This
4,926-square-km land area officially became a national park in 1919. In 1979, it was declared as
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The main feature of the park is the Grand Canyon which is one of the seven natural
wonders of the world. Its geological landscape is one of the most studied landscapes in the
world. The canyon is 446 km long up to 29 km wide and 1,800 m deep.
The park headquarters is at Grand Canyon Village which is close to the park’s south
entrance. The main public areas are the North and South Rims of the canyon. Even though the
park is rugged and remote, many parts of the canyon are still accessible by park trails and
country roads.
Grand Canyon National Park receives about six million visitors every year. Visitors come
to explore the landscape and have a glimpse of its unique flora and fauna. There are also five
Indian tribes – the Hopi, Navajo, Paiute, Havasupai and Hualapai – they call the park as their
home.
A variety of ecosystems exists in the park. There are over 1,700 plants, 450 bird, 90
mammalian, 40 reptiles, 17 fish and 8 amphibian species living in the park. More mammalian
species are living in the Grand Canyon than in Yellowstone National Park. Mostly, visitors may
only see elks, squirrels and mule deer as many mammals there are nocturnal or move around
unnoticed. There are also 22 species of snakes and 18 species of lizards.
There are a large variety of species of invertebrates too. The park has 292 species of
butterflies and moths and 179 species of beetles. One of the most venomous animals in the park
is the bark scorpion. The largest spiders in the world, the tarantulas, also live here.
