Best Laser Fistula Treatment in Thrissur
The main aim of any fistula treatment is to drain the pus and remove the tract
while preventing damage to the sphincter muscles as much as possible. This is
essential to prevent fecal incontinence after the procedure, thereby reducing the
impact on the quality of life after the procedure. The conventional treatments for
fistula involve surgically laying open the tract to drain the pus or completely
removing the tract. Many modern techniques have been developed that achieve
these targets with minimal impact on the sphincter muscles. However, every fistula
is different in terms of position, size, tract opening, etc., and therefore treatment
protocol is highly variable in each case.

What are the different treatments available for anal
fistulas?
Anal fistulas are different in each person and hence different protocols might have
to be used to successfully treat them. An experienced proctologist Dr. Raviram S
will choose a combination of different methods depending on the position, size,
tract opening, etc., Fistulotomy and fistulectomy are the two main conventional
procedures used to treat anal fistulas. Newer techniques like FiLaC and LIFT are
used in combination with conventional surgical methods to achieve good
outcomes and optimum results
What is fistulotomy?
It is a surgical procedure used to treat simple fistulas. Fistulotomy aims to
surgically cut open the fistula tract and drain the pus and other fluids.
What are the special steps that need to be taken
after fistulotomy?
Eat fiber-rich foods to soften the diet
Drink plenty of water
Avoid strenuous activities
Take regular sitz baths
Clean the wound and change the dressing regularly
What is fistulectomy?
It is a procedure in which the fistula tract is completely removed surgically. This also
allows the removal of any secondary tracts that might be present.
What are the different minimally invasive
procedures available for fistula treatment?
Fistula laser closure (FiLaC) and ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT)
are the two most common procedures used to treat anal fistulas. These are
advanced techniques that are minimally invasive and aim to improve the life
quality post surgeries drastically.
What is Fistula laser Closure (FiLaC)?
FiLaC is a minimally invasive procedure where a laser probe is inserted into the
fistula tract. A high-energy laser is applied to burn and close the tract with
minimum damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. This method ensures that the
tract is completely removed by shrinking it and sealing the tissue while reducing
post-operative complications.
What are the advantages of FiLaC treatment?
No damage to the sphincter muscles ensuring better life quality post-operation
No fecal incontinence
Less painful
Quicker healing
Does FiLaC treatment require hospitalization?
FiLac is conducted under regional or local anesthesia. It is usually a day-care
procedure and generally, patients will be discharged the very next day.
What is ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract
(LIFT)?
This procedure is done for fistula tracts that pass through the sphincter muscles.
During this procedure, the skin above the fistula is cut open and the space between
the two sphincter muscles is separated to identify the fistula tract and disconnect it.
What are the advantages of LIFT?
It is minimally invasive
Faster recovery
Sphincter muscle preservation
Low risk of fecal incontinence
