PROFESSIONAL STUDIES 3 INTRODUCTION Overall Purpose Input Submission To ensure that students have the opportunity to evidence how they have gained knowledge of the industries, organisations, regulations and procedures involved in translating design concepts into buildings and integrating plans into overall planning Rather than whole days of lectures we are generally allocating afternoons; Each block is thematically grouped across directed days with at least 3 contributors per day to compliment reading list. Part A: 40% We have Listened • Reduced lectures to half day only • Clarified marking scheme • Reviewed Individual & group weighting • 1No. ‘teams day’ for remote lectures • Ongoing improvement of diversity of contributors, content and practice types/size • More workshops for outp[ut related prep • More time allocation for self-directed study and reflection to reduce intensity • Formation of Study Groups for groupwork • Simplified the business planning aspects from previous years • Allocated time for formative feedback with in-person study group tutorials • Separated Summative submissions for Part A & B Professional Studies (PS3) 23/24 Stephen McCusker - s.mccusker@mmu.ac.uk 25.09.23 Due to timetabling issues there is 1 afternoon of lectures via teams. Opportunities for students to question/ engage with contriobutor content to prepare for outputs Output An illustrated document/portfolio report that may contain text but is limited to pages (diagrams encouraged) to DEMONSTRATE: • You have the SKILLS to prepare designs that will meet building users’ requirements and comply with UK legislation, appropriate performance standards and health and safety requirements through reflection • You they have the SKILLS to prepare Designs that meet building users` requirements within the constraints imposed by cost factors and building regulations • You they have the UNDERSTANDING and KNOWLEDGE of the other required criteria through speculation. PS3 links to 6th Year thesis and beyond by looking forward and speculating on the future Students will assemble as a virtual practice (Groups of 6-8) within which each of their thesis projects are ongoing ‘live’ outputs and produce an aspirational projection/ practice profile as a team/groupwork that speculates on the type of Practice that might produce these – Would they be architects or a more innovative type of practice? what are their methods of investigation, structure etc based on what they have heard/read in PS3? Part B: 60% PS3 links to PS1 & PS2 by looking back and reflecting on what you have done Individual reflection on PS1 OR PS2 (supported through formative feedback) using the inputs (e.g. know what you know now reflect on how you have succeeded or could improve your PS1 output in terms of Life Safety) PROFESSIONAL STUDIES 3 STRUCTURE PS1 & PS2 PS3 PS3.1: Profession PS3.2: Opportunity & Risk PS3.3: Service Delivery Workshop Workshop Q&A PS3.4: Planning PS3.5: Delivery Approaches PS3.6: Approaches to Budget PS3.7: Challenge of Practice Q&A Workshop Workshop Workshop Self-Directed, Student-Centre Learning Formative Feedback Tutorials Individual Summative Assessment Workshop Formative Feedback Tutorials Group Summative Assessment Thesis Project Professional Studies (PS3) 23/24 Stephen McCusker - s.mccusker@mmu.ac.uk 25.09.23 我们将对建筑作为一种职业进行基本介绍,包括监管、会员机构、业务结构、法律背景、道德规范、市场营销 以及将实践作为一种业务的思考。 PROFESSIONAL STUDIES 3 LEARNING Content Structure Self-directed Study We will provide a basic introduction to Architecture as a profession covering regulation, membership bodies, business structures, legal contexts, ethics, marketing and thinking about practice as a business. Content will be released weekly on Moodle to allow preparation and uploading of the contributor input and to pace the student experience across the unit. This learning strategy enables you to take charge of your learning process.Through this you satisfy other ARB/RIBA criteria by demonstrating self-direction in solving problems and acting autonomously when planning and implementing tasks at a professional level. You will have an opportunity to test some of the points and skills regarding pitching for a business or a project. As is usual in any subject you will identify with some subjects more than others. Some students really enjoy the historical and legal side of things but some are more interested in marketing or ethics in practice. This is absolutely normal and we wouldn’t expect anything else. What we do expect at this level is that you take responsibility for your own continuing development and demonstrate and ability for independent learning by looking deeper into those areas that you want to know more about or want to further your knowledge of. • Mondays usually focus on self-directed learning/catch-up on previous weeks • We recommend Tuesday AM for groupwork • Tuesdays PM usually deliver directed lectures, workshops and panels • Time is allocated for tutorials and group presentations towards the end of the unit At this level of study you should be doing more than simply working to a brief. You are required to develop a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in the discipline of Architecture. The ARB/RIBA criteria require you to demonstrate the following: 教学内容将每周在 Moodle 上发布,以便供稿人准备和上传供稿内容,并加快学生• An ability to identify individual learning 在整个单元中的学习进度。 Professional Studies (PS3) 23/24 Stephen McCusker - s.mccusker@mmu.ac.uk 25.09.23 take the initiative and make appropriate decisions • An ability to evaluate and apply a comprehensive range of visual, oral and written media We provide the platform from where you start this journey - Use the lectures to read more about the subjects you are interested in. Use reading lists to locate chapters in the books we have recommended (we don’t expect you to read all these books but we have signposted you to books that help explain things in more detail should you require it). We reference some papers but you can find your own and research areas using the library resources and databases. You have access to the Architect’s Journal too and you can access updates and announcements from the RIBA through the free student membership. Using professional and trade journals you can gain a better understanding of what is going on in the profession. This not only feeds into your final outputs but it advances your knowledge and understanding generally, helping you to develop new skills to a high level. A systematic approach to this beyond the lectures will inform the group and individual tasks set giving you a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights into within contemporary professional practice. PROFESSIONAL STUDIES 3 Questions Your Input Happy to take questions today but we will also be avilable for questions weekly - this is better for the benefit of the year group Sometimes we have cancellations or gaps where we might be able to fit in an additional speaker. We welcome suggestions from you - if you have an idea for a contributor, we might have some budget available to pay them. Please let us know as soon as possible as good people are often busy doing other things! Professional Studies (PS3) 23/24 Stephen McCusker - s.mccusker@mmu.ac.uk 25.09.23
