PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action
Essential for the activity of many enzymes.
Plays an important role in neurotransmission
and muscular excitability (Vallerand &
Sanoski, 2022).
Therapeutic Use
Replacement in deficiency states. Resolution of eclampsia.
Treatment/prevention of hypomagnesemia. Prevention and
treatment of seizures associated with severe eclampsia or
pre-eclampsia. Unlabeled Use: Treatment of torsades de pointes.
Adjunctive treatment for bronchodilation in moderate to severe acute
asthma (Vallerand & Sanoski, 2022).
Complications
Medication Administration
Drowsiness, decrease respiratory rate, arrhythmias,
bradycardia, hypotension, diarrhea, muscle weakness,
flushing, sweating, or hypothermia (Vallerand & Sanoski,
2022).
IV, IM (Vallerand & Sanoski,
2022).
Contraindications/Precautions
Hypermagnesmia, hypocalcemia, anuria, heart block, use
for more than 5-7 days in preterm labor, continuous use
during active labor or within 2 hours of delivery, renal
insufficiency, geriatric (may require lower dose) (Vallerand
& Sanoski, 2022).
Nursing Interventions
Monitor vitals, ECG, patellar
reflex, and neuro status.
Implement seizure precautions
(Vallerand & Sanoski, 2022).
Interactions
May potentiate calcium channel blockers and
neuromuscular blocking agents (Vallerand & Sanoski,
2022).
Client Education
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness
Normal serum magnesium concentrations and control of
seizures associated with toxemias of pregnancy
(Vallerand & Sanoski, 2022).
