At the end of the lesson, learners are expected to:
a. Clarify understanding about VUCA (historical and theoretical foundation)
to be used in analyzing the literary text;
b. Read and analyze a piece of literature critically to assess how valuing
others is expressed in literary texts, and;
c. Demonstrate the means to value the unchanging values in the VUCA
world brought out through writing a literary text.
The learner demonstrates understanding of how Anglo-American literature and other text
types serve as means of valuing other people; also, how to use processing information
strategies, different forms of adverbs and conditionals for him/her to play an active part in a
Chamber Theatre presentation.
The learner proficiently plays an active part in a Chamber Theatre presentation through
employing effective verbal and non- verbal strategies based on the following criteria: Focus,
Voice, Delivery, Facial Expressions, Style and Body Movements or Gestures.

Before we start, I would like to ask you, are you ready to
learn?
Okay, that’s good to hear! Now, as our motivational
activity, I want you to listen to the short audio clip that I am
going to play. Take note of how these two famous
actresses speak and what particular context is present in
their words. Did you get my instructions?
Yes, Ma’am.
Very good! I’ll start playing the audio clip so listen very
carefully. (audio clip played)
OMG, is that Nadine Lustre
and Kathryn Bernardo?
All right! Now, regarding the audio you’ve listened to,
what can you say about the situations that they are in?
A. Introduction
Yes, Ma’am.
Ma’am they are in love!
(students’ answers may vary)
All right, you are definitely correct! It is Nadine Lustre and
Kathryn Bernardo being so in love with their showbiz
boyfriends before. But how are they now with their
boyfriends?
They now experienced break
ups, Ma’am.
Yes, exactly! Despite hearing on the audio how much the
two are in love with their boyfriends, the couple broke up.
Given that these girls fell in love but ended being broken
hearted, what advice do you think our lolo and lola will give
them?
Students will answer…
If that so, you’re going to enjoy analyzing a piece of
lietarture we have today but in analyzing, we have to recall Tone again is the authors
first the tone, mood, technique and purpose of the author attitude on writing.
in writing in order to easily interpret the meaning that the
poem wants to convey. Can you recall what is Tone?
How about the mood?
Mood is the atmosphere of the
piece, technique is more of the
author’s language used.
What about the purpose of the author?
The purpose of the author why
he/she wrote a certain literary
piece
Okay very good! Let’s give ourselves a Yow Yow Yow

3 claps, Yow! Yow! Yow1
Yow! Yow!
Who among you experienced having a crush or even
falling in love, given your current ages?
(Students raise their hands)
I see that the majority of the class experience falling I love.
Well then, let us find out how are we, especially you, will
going to be connected to our literary piece for today.

I have here a poem of Alfred Edward Housman entitled
“When I was one-and-twenty.’ Listen as I read first the
poem then later on, you will be the ones to read it again.
After that, we will analyze each line of these poem.
When I was one-and-twenty
When I was one-and twenty
I heard a wise man say,
“Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free.”
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.
When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
“The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue.”
And I am two-and-twenty,
And oh, ‘tis true, ‘tis true.
Now, read the poem once again. In 1, 2, 3, read!
When I was one-and-twenty
When I was one-and twenty
I heard a wise man say,
“Give crowns and pounds and
guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free.”
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.
When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
“The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue.”
And I am two-and-twenty,
And oh, ‘tis true, ‘tis true.
Before we proceed to the analysis of the poem, let’s unlock
first the unfamiliar words we found on the poem. We have
the Guinea which is an English gold coin way back from
1663-1813. We also have the Rubies/Ruby which is a red
precious stone. Lastly, Rue means to feel sorrow or regret.
Later on we will find out how these words contribute to the
meaning of the poem.

Now, as our guide towards analyzing this poem, let us have
these guide questions:
1) What was the theme of the poem? How many
persons are involved in the poem?
Two, the speaker and the
wise man. It is about love and
sorrow.
That’s right! It talks about a wise man giving some love
advice to a one-and twenty or a 21-year-old. As you can
see in the first two lines in the first stanza:
When I was one-and twenty
I heard a wise man say,
The 21-year-old spoke to a wise man, asserting that a wise
man could pertained to be older than the 21-year-old.
2) What specific advice was given by the wise man
to the young man?
Not to fall in love.
Correct! As you can see in the next 3 lines of the poem, the
wise man tells the speaker to give away anything but the
heart. The next lines:
“Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies”
But keep your fancy free
As we unlocked the term “guinea a while ago, what does it
mean again?
An English gold coin from
1663-1813
All right! When we say a gold coin, we knew it’s very
valuable, and in this poem, crowns and guinea could be
given up that easy but the heart couldn’t be. Even the
precious pearls and rubies, which is again a kind of
precious stone, symbolized wealth and money and the
wise man says that it is better to happen a wealthy man fall
into poverty than to fall in love. Did you get what I mean?
Yes, Ma’am
3) Did the young man listen to the advice of the wise
man?
(Some student says “NO”,
some answers “YES”)
Yes, it is not actually mentioned directly or specifically on
the poem but on the last two lines of the first stanza:
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.
The speaker clarified that it is useless for the wise man say
that to him or to give him some advice because he is
already 21 years old. As a 21-year-old, he maybe thinks of
no one to control his decisions, especially in love. Are you
having the same perception as him? Will you listen to
someone saying you should not fall in love at the age of
21?
Students’ answers vary.

4) How does the transition happen in the poem from
the first stanza up to the second?
(clueless)
In the second stanza, the speaker once again mentioned
his encountered of the wise man evident in the lines”
When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
And the wise man still says how sorrowful it is to be in
loved.
“The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue.”
It was said that giving your heart is like buying your own
sorrow and regrets in life. Are you getting the idea of the
wise man about love?
Yes, Ma’am
Now, the transition is really evident on the second stanza
specifically on the last lines. If the speaker did not listen to
the wise man on the first stanza, on the second stanza, the
speaker proved that what the wise man said is true now
that he is already 22 years old who maybe already
experienced a heartbreak.
And I am two-and-twenty,
And oh, ‘tis true, ‘tis true.
The 21-year-old and now turned 22 proved to himself that
yes, the wise man is right about his advice in me a year
ago. Did you understand the poem?
Yes, Ma’am.
Class, you see how literature connects to the reality of the
world? Heartbreaks are often experienced by most of the
people, just like for example, Kathryn Bernardo, Nadine
Lustre, and more, right? Even values are present in the
poem wherein the elders used to give advice to youth. This
is how the literature connects to the unchanging values in
the VUCA World.
What is VUCA? First used in 1987, VUCA is an acronym
based on the leadership theories of Warren Bennis and
Burt Nanus, that stands for volatility, uncertainty,
complexity, and ambiguity. In a VUCA world, the most
important thing is to anticipate the future and strengthen
cooperation to come up with better solutions to problems
and challenges.
Again, VUCA stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity,
and ambiguity. Let us define first what is Volatility.
Kindly read the definition of Volatility, student 1.
Volatility refers to the speed
of change in an industry
market, or the world in
general.

Volatility is something that talks about how faster or slower
changes happen. Just like for example from the poem,
when the speaker didn’t listen to the wise man at first but
proved at the end that what he said is true.
Next, let’s have the U of VUCA. Kindly read the definition Uncertainty refers to the
of Uncertainty, student 2.
extent to which we can
confidently predict the future.
Uncertainty is predicting what will happen. Just like for
example from the poem, when the wise man predicts how
heartbreak is painful than any other falls in life.
Then, let’s proceed to the C of VUA. Kindly read the Complexity refers to the
definition of Complexity, student 3.
number of factors that we
need to take into account, their
variety, and the relationships
between them.
Complexity is something that makes the situations
complex, just like for example from the poem, when the
speaker did not listen and did not take into consideration
of the wise man’s advice about love, who is possibly elder
than him and had learened from experience.
Lastly, kindly read the definition of Ambiguity, student 4.
Ambiguity is when something is ambiguous or unclear.
Just like for example from the poem, when the speaker
doesn’t know if he will believe the wise man at the
beginning of the poem because he himself does not yet
experience falling in love that’s why, the advice of the wise
man is unclear not until he experienced it already. Class
are we clear?
ACTIVITY #1: ANALYZE-SING!
Ambiguity refers to a lack of
clarity about how to interpret
something.
Yes, Ma’am.
Directions: After analyzing the poem “When I was oneand-twenty, the students will have to compare it to their
analysis of the given song lyrics of Ed Sheeran entitled
“Photograph”. Use the following guide questions in
analyzing the song lyrics.
Photograph
C. Engagement
Loving can hurt, loving can hurt sometimes
But it’s the only thing that I know
When it gets hard, you know it can get hard sometimes
It is the only thing makes us feel alive
…
And if you hurt me
That’s okay, baby, only words bleed
Inside these pages, you just hold me
And I won’t ever let you go
Wait for me to come home.
