Exploring Variable Stars and Compact
Stars: Understanding the Diversity of
Stellar Phenomena
ASTRONOMY (BSED SCIENCE 4 – UNIT EARNER)

Introduction to
Variable Stars
Variable stars are stars that
exhibit changes in
brightness over time.
Classifications of Variable
Stars
INTRINSIC VARIABLES: Stars whose
variations in brightness are due to internal
processes.
EXTRINSIC VARIABLES: Stars whose
brightness changes due to external factors
like eclipses or interactions with companion
stars.
INTRINSIC VARIABLE
STARS
EXAMPLES:
Cepheid
variables,
Lyrae stars, and Mira variables.

EXAMPLES: Eclipsing binaries, Cataclysmic
variables, and Supernovae.

STARS
Compact Stars
Are dense stellar
remnants that result
from the evolution of
massive stars.
White Dwarfs
White dwarfs are the
remnants of low to
medium-mass
stars
after they exhaust their
nuclear fuel.
Neutron Stars
Neutron
stars
are
collapsed
core
of
massive stars after a
supernova explosion.
Black Holes
Black Holes are regions
of spacetime where
gravity is so strong that
nothing, not even light,
can escape.
