Evaluation and termination

Introduction:
An important part of NSTP community immersion is the development of community-based project. In managing
NSTP project, the universal management function as planning, organization, staffing, directing and controlling be
given due consideration to ensure the success of implementation of the projects.
Discussion Proper:
Evaluation and termination are the final stages of a project. Evaluation of a project looks at “the progress
and performance relative to the project’s initial or revised plan” (Mantel 272). This should be done at the end of the
project, but it is also important to evaluate the project throughout the project life cycle since it gives management the
data needed for decision and control purposes (Mantel 273).
Different methods can be used in the evaluation; however, the major criteria used in evaluation should center on success
factors like efficiency, customer impact and satisfaction, business and direct success, and future potential (Mantel 273274). The project should also be evaluated based upon the reasons why the project was selected in the first place,
contributions to overall business goals, team member goals accomplished, and other factors that contributed to the
strengths and weaknesses of the project. The true problem can lie in measuring the evaluation, especially when looking
at earned values and expenditures. Therefore, it is important for the team to determine the measurement criteria before
the project starts.
Project Termination is a situation when a given project is supposed to be closed or finalized because there’s no more
need or sense for further continuation. It is managed under a respective procedure that requires the management team
to examine the current state of the project work, review process of goals and objectives, evaluate the project against
success criteria, and check status or deliverables.
Every project has to officially end sometime. Project termination need not necessarily mean project failure or
premature abandonment. A project may be terminated for a variety of reasons, including successful completion of
the endeavor.
A natural termination of a project happens when the project’s goals are met. An unnatural termination can happen
anytime during a project, regardless of the project meeting its set goals. The unnatural termination of a project can
happen because of a breakdown in client/vendor relationships, a change in customer needs or due to lack of sufficient
funds for the project
Conclusion:
Terminating a project is not easy, neither for the stakeholders making the decision nor for the project team involved.
While project termination may be inevitable, at times it is preventable. That is why it is important for a project
manager to recognize vulnerability to a project termination, identify where a termination decision is likely to come
from, and if possible, try to analyze any options available.
