Strength and conditioning – introduction
What is strength and conditioning ?
-
-
Involves the planning, delivery, and evaluation of the physical and physiological
preparation of athletes aligned to specific sports performance outcomes
Strength and conditioning coaches understand what it takes for an athlete to be
resilient to the demands of the intensity and volume within their training environment
thus maximising the technical training opportunities in their respective sports. Plans
can then be specifically tailored to the adaptations required and maximised in the
strength and conditioning coaching environment in line with the culture of the sport
It is about more than lifting weights – it encompasses the entire physical
development of the athlete and what is required to allow them to be the best physical
version of themselves (EIS 2022)
What does an effective s&c coach look like ?
What does the role look like?
It is highly dependent on
-
The sport
The organisation
The competition levels
The budget
Knowledge and philosophy of management team
Level within the s/c team
Common aspects of the role involve
-
Testing (strength, power, speed, endurance, movement)
Coaching
Programming
Facilitating rehabilitation
Monitoring (training load, athlete wellness and readiness)
-
Communication – part of a wider team
Recovery
Match day prep
Team sport example
Interns
Extremely competitive
Must have sticking power to get a role
Must demonstrate some experience of
working (likely for free) in sport (placements are
an advantage)
USP?
(More information available of what higher roles
do on PowerPoint)
What’s the difference?
Part 2 – revisiting deterministic models of performance
Deterministic models – roughly translates to what makes us good at this thing?
“a modelling paradigm that determines the relationships between a movement outcome
measure and the biomechanical factors that produce such a measure” Hay and Reed 1988
Long jump example
Key technical indicators
-
Coach (technical/tactical ) impact
Medical impact
Strength and conditioning impact
Other (nutrition/psychology)
