Title: Solar eclipse
Tuesday 19th March
Starter
Answer the following questions in your book – it doesn’t matter if
you don’t know the answer, take an educated guess.
1. Is there gravity in space? Include evidence to support your
answer?
2. Is there air resistance in space?
1. Is there gravity in space? What evidence supports your answer?
Yes there is a small amount of gravity in space. We know this
because the planets orbit the Sun and gravity is what holds them
in this orbit.
2. Is there air resistance in space?
No because there aren’t any air particles in space!
Solar eclipse
A solar eclipse happens when, at just the right moment, the Moon passes
between the Sun and Earth.
Fun fact
The last solar eclipse on Earth was on April 20th 2023 and the next one will be
on October 14th 2023.
The next one that we will see in South Africa will be February 17th 2026!
Task
1. Click on the link below and watch the animation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQ-UHxPHh9A
2. Pause the video and draw a diagram in your book to show how a
partial solar eclipse is formed and a total solar eclipse.
Task: Use the key words at the bottom to complete the gaps – be
careful as there are more words than gaps!
• A solar eclipse happens when the ……………… passes between the
Sun and Earth.
• If only part of the Sun’s light is blocked it is called a ……………..
solar eclipse.
• If all of the Sun’s light is blocked it is called a …………… solar
eclipse.
• As the Moon blocks the Sun’s light, it casts a …………………. on part
of the Earth.
• The Moon’s shadow creates a trail as the …………… rotates. This
trail is called the path of totality.
