Lesson 1: Introduction to Mathematics, Science and Technology Objectives: In this lesson, the student is expected to: a. describe mathematics, science and technology as separate disciplines; b. explain the connection between mathematics and science; science and technology; and mathematics and technology; and c. discuss the interconnection between science Mathematics, Science and Technology are among the foundations of the society. These three are interconnected disciplines that functions hand in hand. Science is the brain, mathematics is the tool and technology is the product. Mathematics is the science of numbers, quantities and shapes and the relation between them. It is the abstract of science of numbers and a science that deals with logic of shapes, quantity and arrangement. It is a building block of other disciplines. It is also the science of measurement, quantity and magnitude and it is exact, precise and systematic. Science is a systematic and logical study of structure, and behaviour of the physical and natural world. It is an intellectual and practical activity that involves observation and experiment. Some generalize it as the study of the universe. Technology is the use of knowledge, tools, techniques, etc. in order to solve problems. It is the practical application of scientific knowledge and a combination of techniques and methods. It is the application of mental and physical effort in order to achieve the same value. It helps in improving the quality of life since it deals with the creation and use of technical means and interrelation with life, society and environment. Relationship of Mathematics and Science Mathematics can be applied and is closely related to science. It is an essential part and process of science. Scientific equations are usually expressed in mathematical equations since mathematics is the language of science. Math runs in the veins of science. Science use mathematics as a tool to describe science. Relationship of Science and Technology Science is a systematic process used in technology. Technology is the application and product of science. It is impossible to separate the two since scientific process is always followed by technological advancement. Science may drive technological development by making demands for new technologies. Science and technology have different purposes but they can be enhanced through mutual study. Technology creates devices and solves problems through science. Relationship of Mathematics and Technology Without mathematics, most technology will be impossible since calculations are used in creating technologies. All careers require mathematical knowledge and mathematics is used in several ways in technology. Mathematics can be applied to other disciplines that deal with technology. It is a tool used in technology. Technology on the other hand provides additional opportunities for learning mathematical concepts. It also provides additional opportunities, exploration and discoveries. Every technology is related to mathematics.
