SOP for Safe Handling of Specimens in Laboratories Scope: This SOP applies to all laboratory personnel involved in handling, processing, and storing specimens at the University of Health Sciences Lahore. Responsibilities: Laboratory personnel must adhere to this SOP and receive training on safe handling practices. Laboratory supervisors are responsible for ensuring compliance with this SOP and providing necessary resources and training. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Lab coats, gloves, and eye protection must be worn when handling specimens. Additional PPE, such as masks or face shields, should be worn based on the specimen's nature and the risk of exposure. Specimen Collection: Specimens should be collected using appropriate techniques and devices to minimize the risk of contamination. Use leak-proof containers and label them correctly with the patient's information and any necessary precautions. Specimen Transport: Transport specimens in leak-proof containers that are labeled correctly. Use secondary containment, such as a plastic bag, to contain spills during transport. Specimen Processing: Process specimens in a designated area with proper ventilation. Use biological safety cabinets (BSCs) for procedures that may generate aerosols. Specimen Storage: Store specimens in appropriate containers and conditions to maintain their integrity. Use refrigeration or freezing as necessary, following guidelines for the specific specimen type. Spill Response: In case of a spill, immediately contain the area and notify the supervisor. Wear appropriate PPE and follow the laboratory's spill response procedure. Waste Management: Dispose of biological waste, including contaminated materials and sharps, according to the University's waste management guidelines. Segregate and label waste containers properly.
