SOP for Safe Handling of Specimens in Laboratories
Scope: This SOP applies to all laboratory personnel involved in handling,
processing, and storing specimens at the University of Health Sciences Lahore.
Responsibilities:
 Laboratory personnel must adhere to this SOP and receive training on safe
handling practices.
 Laboratory supervisors are responsible for ensuring compliance with this SOP
and providing necessary resources and training.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
 Lab coats, gloves, and eye protection must be worn when handling specimens.
 Additional PPE, such as masks or face shields, should be worn based on the
specimen's nature and the risk of exposure.
Specimen Collection:
 Specimens should be collected using appropriate techniques and devices to
minimize the risk of contamination.
 Use leak-proof containers and label them correctly with the patient's information
and any necessary precautions.
Specimen Transport:
 Transport specimens in leak-proof containers that are labeled correctly.
 Use secondary containment, such as a plastic bag, to contain spills during
transport.
Specimen Processing:
 Process specimens in a designated area with proper ventilation.
 Use biological safety cabinets (BSCs) for procedures that may generate
aerosols.
Specimen Storage:
 Store specimens in appropriate containers and conditions to maintain their
integrity.
 Use refrigeration or freezing as necessary, following guidelines for the specific
specimen type.
Spill Response:
 In case of a spill, immediately contain the area and notify the supervisor.
 Wear appropriate PPE and follow the laboratory's spill response procedure.
Waste Management:
 Dispose of biological waste, including contaminated materials and sharps,
according to the University's waste management guidelines.
 Segregate and label waste containers properly.
