Number: CLASS 173
Name: 150 Flanged Commodity Fiberglass Reinforced Vinyl Ester Pipe
Approved By: Tony Smith;
Effective Date: 10/24/2022
Owner: Mechanical
Next Review Due: 10/22/2032
Attention: For regions with limited experience with FRP design, fabrication,
and installation, see General Note 32 in Piping Specifications.

Corrosion allowance:
None
Examination:
ASME NM.2 Level 2
Branch table:
Use fittings
Piping material:
Vendor standard, machine made fiberglass reinforced thermosetting vinyl ester pipe using a
bisphenol A epoxy vinyl ester resin (Derakane 411, Hetron 922, or approved equal) with a 100 mil
(2.5 mm) resin rich liner/corrosion barrier. (Note 3)
Valve material:
FRP, Polyester, or Ductile iron with EPDM, PFA, PTFE, or PVDF liner
PT Ratings:
150 psig at -20°F to 175°F (10.3 barg at -29°C to 79°C). See Figure 1 and Note 4.
NOTES
1.
Refer to the General Notes in the Piping Specifications section of the Engineering SharePoint site, for IMPORTANT
additional information concerning the application of this specification.
2.
FRP pipe per this piping class is not recommended for above ground pressurized gas services above 25 psig (1.7
barg).
3.
Pipe and fitting design, including support details, and piping system fabrication and installation requirements shall
be per applicable vendor manuals and in accordance with the latest edition of ASME NM.2.
4.
a.
Minimum FRP pipe diameter shall be NPS 1-1/2 (DN 40).
b.
The joint system shall be manufacturer's standard, and fittings are to be from the same manufacturer and of
the same material as the pipe.
c.
Filament-wound pipe shall meet ASTM D2996. Centrifugally cast pipe shall meet ASTM D2997. Fittings shall
meet ASTM D5685.
Tables 1 through 3 are general guides to pressure and temperature limits which vary between manufacturers.
Exact pressure limits may be higher or lower depending upon pipe size and valves used. Vacuum service limits may
apply. Consult vendor literature for details. It is the piping engineer’s responsibility to ensure that the appropriate
physical properties and pressure/temperature limits are considered.
a.
5.
6.
Pressure/temperature limits for selected valves are shown in Figure 1. Contact the valve manufacturer for
pressure and temperature limits not shown in Figure 1.
Joint preparation and tool use must follow the piping manufacturer's instructions.
a.
Pipe fitters and craftsmen must be qualified as bonders using the piping manufacturer's joining procedures.
This will typically involve burst testing of an agreed-upon quantity of test joints by each of the personnel who
will be making the joints. Qualification must take place prior to the start of any job, or a minimum of once
every 12 months.
b.
Heat cured adhesive joints are highly recommended for operating temperatures above 120°F (49°C).
Flanges shall bolt to similar style flanges such as raised face to raised face and flat face to flat face. If a mismatch is
found during design (i.e. RF valve to FF pipe/fitting), all options should be considered in order to avoid a FF to RF
flange joint make-up in the field, including redesign of a pipe spool or use of a RFLJ flange. If it is necessary to bolt
together dissimilar flanges, it shall comply with Albemarle Standard PD-6-3 Detail 52 or 53. Direct bolting of a flat
faced FRP flange to any type of raised face flange is not acceptable.
a.
Narrow washers shall be used on all FRP flanges.

b.
CLASS 173- 150 Flanged Commodity Fiberglass Reinforced Vinyl Ester Pipe
Pipe and fitting manufacturer shall provide Albemarle the bolt torque ratings of each flange size and type,
based on PTFE coated bolts and lubricated bolts. Actual bolt torque shall not exceed the flange manufacturer
torque rating.
