The documentary “Effects of Global Warming” published by the National Geographic,
demonstrates the seriousness of global warming, how climate change occurs and suggests
ways of preventing climate change. The writer shows all these and develops his ideas by using
his tone very carefully and giving many examples of cause - result relationships within the
process of global warming becoming one of the world’s most important issues. Throughout the
article the writer provides information about how the greenhouse effect is the main cause of
global warming, how global warming affects human beings and tells how the earth changes by
this serious matter of today’s world.
The writer first starts to tell about the greenhouse effect likening it to a phenomenon and
how it occurs by giving very descriptive explanations. He explains that some specific types of
gasses contribute to this effect’s creation and gives examples of them such as carbon dioxide.
Then he further explains how these gasses behave when sunlights comes into the atmosphere
allowing readers to imagine what happens more easily and he mentions that the gasses let the
sunlight come into the atmosphere but they do not let some of its heat leave the atmosphere
causing the earth to heat up by creating a cause - result relationship between two incidents and
connecting them. And the writer creates a more tense atmosphere within the article by giving
scary facts about the earth and such as the carbon dioxide levels reaching the levels that
haven't been reached in hundreds of years to better show the seriousness of the earth’s today's
situation. And further explains the reasons behind this rise in the carbon dioxide levels by
considering human activities’ consequences, thus showing the reader that human activities
increase the greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere further resulting in the increase of the heat
of the earth.
Other than just giving explanations of how these effects occur and scare the reader by giving
facts and examples, the writer also tells about how these effects and changes in the earth’s
climate and carbon dioxide levels will affect the human population and their health. The writer
explains that the increasing carbon dioxide levels because of human activities also increasing
the heat of the earth, decreases the human living standards at the same time. He connects the
increasing carbon dioxide with creating smoke in the atmosphere, the air that human beings
breathe everyday. And tells the reader that being exposed to this type of carbon dioxide
involving smoke would seriously harm human health. By telling that being exposed to the smoke
and harm of it may even lead to humans having diseases such as asthma and even could lead
to lung cancer, the writer also wants to demonstrate the solemnity of the consequences of rising
greenhouse gasses and human activities.
In order to add more to the results of this global problem on earth, the writer also explains
the physical change of the earth by explaining and discussing what happens to the glaciers,
why growing crops becomes harder, how the animal and plant living areas shift and why water
supplies become diminished. The writer starts by giving examples such as Antarctica and
glaciers melting due to climate change and rising temperatures resulting in rising sea levels and
coastal regions facing floods because of this melting, furthermore by connecting this
consequence to the effects of rising greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere the writer is also
successfully shows their impacts on the earth too. Then, continues with explaining the
challenges that the extreme weather conditions cause to add to the serious tone of the text and
to make the reader believe that the consequences of climate change will not be returnable. So,
the writer talks about growing crops getting harder due to changing weather conditions and
changing necessities to grown food and crops. And at the same time adds to these crucial
changes in nature due to climate change and explains that the animal and plant living areas are
shifting and will also shift further because of the changing needs of these creatures to live by the
change in the climate conditions.
The writer gives some examples to prevent the further harm that climate change can cause
in the future to conclude the article and urge the readers to take action against this problem. So
the writer brings the whole article together by developing the text by explaining the reasons
behind and the results of the climate change which mainly existed due to the greenhouse effect
that occurred because of the greenhouse gasses. Writer connects the human activities’ results
with the rising greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide and deduces this as the main cause
of the smoke created in the atmosphere which seriously affects humans’ health. Thus to add
more details to the harm that the increasing greenhouse gasses would contribute to, the writer
further explains other results of climate change such as animal and plant living areas shifting
etc. With all of these reasonings and examples the writer tries to prove the reader that climate
change is one of the serious matters’ of the today's world and must be taken seriously in order
to prevent the worst case scenario that could happen and harm the earth and the living
components of it such as human beings, animals and plants.
