Science Stage 9 Paper 1 Cambridge Lower Secondary Progression Test Mark Scheme 3146_01_MS_6RP © UCLES 2024 2024 S9/01 Science Stage 9 Paper 1 Mark Scheme 2024 General guidelines on marking Many descriptive answers can be expressed in a variety of ways. Professional judgement can be used in these cases, providing it matches the marking points and further information in the mark scheme. Answers may have words spelt incorrectly. Credit is normally given for phonetically correct answers, unless the word has a scientifically different meaning. For example, where the answer should be antennae, credit will be given for antena but not for anthen (too close to anther). Only the science is being assessed, so answers do not need to be grammatically correct. Significant figures will be indicated in the question or in the mark scheme. Unless specified all marking points are independent. Annotations and abbreviations / or alternate responses for the same marking point ( ) brackets the words or units in brackets do not need to be stated, for example, (recycles or releases or provides) minerals = minerals scores the mark underline exact word is required Accept an acceptable response Do not accept indicates an incorrect response that would contradict another otherwise correct alternative Ignore indicates an irrelevant answer that is not creditworthy. Full marks can still be achieved even with answers that are ignored. Note provides extra information when necessary ecf error carried forward; marks are awarded if an incorrect response has been carried forward from earlier working provided the subsequent working is correct ora or reverse argument; for example, as mass increases, volume increases could be written as mass decreases, volume decreases © UCLES 2024 Page 2 of 12 2(c) 2(b) 2(a) Question 1(b) 1(a) Question © UCLES 2024 S9/01 gas at room temperature low boiling point low melting point any one from Page 3 of 12 (explanation) a pair of electrons shared (by two atoms) (type of bonding) covalent (bonding) 10 protein(s) (E) (renal) artery (D) urethra Marks Further Information 1 2024 Accept poor conductor of electricity or does not conduct electricity or can flow easily or has a low density Accept two electrons that are shared 2 each correct answer = 1 mark 1 1 one or two correct = 1 mark (C) bladder 3 all five correct = 3 marks Further Information three or four correct = 2 marks Answer Marks (B) ureter (A) kidney Answer Science Stage 9 Paper 1 Mark Scheme 5(c) 5(b) 5(a) Question 4(b) 4(a) Question 3 Question © UCLES 2024 S9/01 Answer zinc is less reactive than magnesium magnesium sulfate copper displacement Page 4 of 12 2024 Accept zinc is lower down the reactivity series than magnesium 1 Accept ora Note answers can be given in either order 2 each correct answer = 1 mark 1 Ignore chemical Further Information Ignore nutrition or taking in nutrients Accept eating (process B) feeding 2 each correct answer = 1 mark 1 Further Information Ignore perspiration 1 Accept endothermic Further Information Accept burning Marks Marks Marks (process A) combustion Answer label the arrow from carbon dioxide in the air to carbon compounds in plants with the letter P evaporation Answer Science Stage 9 Paper 1 Mark Scheme 37 38 age of fetus in weeks 2.30 35 2.40 2.50 2.60 2.70 2.80 2.90 36 37 38 39 40 3.00 36 6(c) 2.30 35 2.40 2.50 2.60 2.70 point at (38, 2.6) circled mass of fetus in kg 2.80 2.90 3.00 6(b) 6(a) Question © UCLES 2024 S9/01 39 40 Answer Page 5 of 12 Marks Science Stage 9 Paper 1 Mark Scheme 2 1 small square = Note line of best fit judged by eye and does not consider the anomalous result Do not accept dot to dot Accept ecf on plotting from part (b) 1 Accept ecf on plotting from part (a) Accept ecf on plotting from part (a) 1 Accept any indication of anomalous plot, e.g. circle on table of results, but answer on graph takes precedence Accept plots with small x, dot, or dot with circle 1 mark all points correctly plotted ± 2 labelling of x-axis and labelling of y-axis = 1 mark Further Information 2024 amplitude 7(c) Page 6 of 12 high pitch sound has higher frequency (than low pitch sound) arrow drawn vertically from x-axis to the crest of waveform or arrow drawn vertically from x-axis to the trough of waveform Answer Marks Science Stage 9 Paper 1 Mark Scheme 7(b) 7(a) Question © UCLES 2024 S9/01 1 Accept the frequency decreases 1 Accept ora 1 Further Information 2024 Answer decreases 98 10(b) D E (B) A C Answer Answer Page 7 of 12 (idea that) continents moved apart due to movement of plates or moved apart due to plate tectonics Marks Marks Marks Science Stage 9 Paper 1 Mark Scheme (idea that) these continents were once joined together 10(a) Question 9 Question 8 Question © UCLES 2024 S9/01 1 Accept answers in the range 80–120 1 Further Information AC in correct order = 1 mark 2 DE in correct order = 1 mark Further Information Accept (idea of) continental drift 2 each correct answer = 1 mark Further Information 2024 12 Question 11(b) 11(a) Question © UCLES 2024 S9/01 stars dust and gas Answer in a series circuit the lamps are less bright A Answer Page 8 of 12 Marks Marks Science Stage 9 Paper 1 Mark Scheme Accept dust and gas in either order 3 each correct answer = 1 mark Further Information Note answer must be comparative 1 Accept ora Ignore junction of conductor symbols correct symbol for lamps in parallel and correct symbol for ammeter in series with one lamp = 1 mark Do not accept open switch correct symbol for a battery of cells and closed switch = 1 mark 3 any complete circuit drawn with at least one component and no gaps = 1 mark Further Information 2024 13(b) 13(a) Question © UCLES 2024 S9/01 R S R Some adaptations are advantageous in one environment and not in another.
