Build an Atom
Open the Build an Atom Interactive Simulation found in the Syllabus and the Study Guide under the Unit I Lab
Assignment.
You will need to take screenshots in this assignment. You can do this by selecting the three vertical dots in the
bottom right hand corner of the simulation screen and then selecting “Screenshot.” A screenshot will be
downloaded to your browser, which you can save to your computer.
Part 1: Build an Atom
Click on the + sign for each of the boxes (element name, net charge and mass number) to view changes as you
change the number of particles in the atom.
Directions: Create an Oxygen (O) atom (8 protons, 8 neutrons, 8 electrons). Follow the directions, observe what
happens and complete the table below. (You need to RESET back to your original Oxygen (O) atom (8
proton, 8 neutrons, 8 electrons) after you make each change!)
Observe and record
ALL changes to the
original Oxygen (O)
atom when each
subatomic particle is
added!
Add a Neutron
Add an Electron
Add a Proton

Using your periodic tables, choose three elements (up to neon) and build their atoms using the simulator. Each
atom must be STABLE and NEUTRAL. Fill in the information about them after you build each atom.

Part 2: Atoms and ions and isotopes, oh my!
Play with the simulation to discover:
1. Which particle affects the charge of an atom or ion. __electron_____________
2. Which particle changes the type of element your atom is. __proton________
3. Which particle makes the atom an unstable isotope (make sure to check the box at the bottom that
says stable/unstable). ______neutron___________
Atomic Number, Atomic Mass and Charge
Play with the simulation to identify what each number signifies. Label the diagram below.
______atomic mass_______
______
____neutral___
_______atomic number___________
Design a stable Fluorine ion with a charge of +2
Design a stable Carbon ion with a charge of -1
Take a screenshot of your Fluorine ion and insert below.
Take a screenshot of your Carbon ion and insert below.
Part 3: Click Game at the bottom of the simulator window. Play the four games- can you get all five stars each
time?
Take a screenshot of your results of ALL FOUR games and insert on the next page.
