intimacy, unpredictability, sadness, rapture and

Romantic Opera is a style of opera
that emerged in the 19th century. It
focuses on emotional expression and the
individual experience, often featuring stories
of tragic love and heroism. Romantische
Opera is a genre of early nineteenth-century
German opera that developed from the
opéras comiques of the French Revolution.

OPERA?
OPERA increasingly
became popular
during the romantic
period. It is a
musical composition
having all or most of
its text set to music
with arias, recitative, choruses, duets, trios, etc.

usually characterized by elaborate costumes,
scenery and choreography.

LIBRETTO

opera. Librettist
and the composer
work closely
together to tell the
story.
SCORE
The book that the
composer and librettist
put together. The score
has all the musical
notes, words and ideas
to help the performers
tell the story.
Recitative
Declamatory singing, used in the prose
parts and dialogue of opera. Different
roles in opera are created taking into
account different types of voices.
ARIA
An air solo singing part sung by a
principal character. This song is what the
public will remember best when leaving
the opera house.
