Literal, figurative and emotive language
Emotive Language
Emotive Language is the type of language which conveys or evokes an emotion in
the mind of the reader. It requires choosing the words carefully which best describe
the emotions and phrase them in such a way that the feeling is clear to the reader.
For Example:
Non-Emotive: The government has reduced the petrol price.
Emotive: The government has slashed the price of petrol.
Explanation: Notice that just by changing the word “reduced” to “slashed”, the
emotional setting of the sentence has been increased dramatically. We see emotive
language especially in; adverts, poems and speeches.
Rewrite the following sentences so that the emotion becomes clearer.
Use these words to help you; Beautiful, huge, scorching, awesome, stunning,
enormous, cool, awesome.
1. I don’t like school.
_
2. That girl is very pretty.
3. The man’s muscles are big!
4. My new shoes look nice!
5. It is a very warm day!
Figurative Speech Comes in Many Forms. We can find figurative language in:
• Simile (comparisons often with as or like): as smooth as silk, as fast as
the wind, quick like a lightning bolt.
• Metaphor (comparison without like or as): You're such an airhead. It's
bursting with flavour.
• Hyperbole (exaggerating statement): In order to get my assignment
done, I'll have to burn the midnight oil.
Page | 20

ECD & Primary School Support : Grades 4-7 Languages
• Personification (giving something a human quality): The sun smiled
down on me. The leaves danced in the wind.
Literal language is frank and straight to the point. It is also fairly easy to
recognize; The apple is green. That dog runs fast.
Indicate whether the following sentences are literal or figurative speech.
I’m so hungry, I could eat a horse.
She is as fast as a cheetah!
He was late to dinner.
I stayed up late last night, I’m so tired!
Time is money.
They sky is grey with all the clouds.
The field is calm and quiet.
It’s raining cats and dogs!
My bag is so heavy.
His head is shaped like an egg.
I am drowning in all the work!
That man can swim like a fish.

Active and passive voice
In active voice sentences the subject does the action.
Example: Liz played the piano.
•• In passive voice sentences the subject receives the action.
Example: The piano was played by Liz.
- The sentence that uses the active voice is stronger, uses fewer words, and clearly
shows who performs the action.
- The sentence that uses the passive voice is weaker and less direct. It is, however,
not incorrect to use the passive voice.
•• Sometimes the doer of the action is omitted in passive voice sentences.
Example: The piano was played.
