Philippines and its natural disasters
Recent statistics and facts
The Philippines sits within the Pacific Ring of Fire, where its horseshoe
shape engulfs an area of 40 thousand kilometers. This makes us prone to
earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Flooding due to heavy rains brought
by the southwest monsoon and low-pressure area also affects the region,
resulting in damage to many livelihoods. In 2021 alone, damages caused
by natural disasters amounted to over 60 billion Philippine pesos, mainly
due to storms that occurred during the year.
How does this
affect the lives of
Filipinos, both in
the short-term
and the longterm?

Gender equality in the Philippines
The role of women in the Filipino society
Women's rights in the Philippines, particularly in the workforce, are
progressing. According to the 2021 Global Gender Gap report, the
Philippines ranks 17th globally in gender equality, improving the gap
between men and women.
However, the Philippines has a strong patriarchial system where men are
traditionally believed to be the main breadwinners while women are
responsible for childbearing. In the Philippines, women are still strongly
tied to their traditional roles as mother, wife, and housekeeper.
How does this
impact your
beliefs or
opinions on the
role of women in
our society?
