Background Analysis
and Tourism Status
Pamilacan Island is a small island which is part of the municipality of
Baclayon. It is between the deep sea of Bohol and Mindanao. It is only
a 1-hour pump or outrigger boat ride from the town of Baclayon. It
has three sitios, one at the southern coast, one situated inland and
the other facing the town of Baclayon. Home to more or less 200
families, this fishing community is closely knit. Their main livelihood
is fishing, and in the past has gone after whales, manta rays and
dolphins. Their houses are often decorated with large whale jaws and
bones and these ‘relics’ adds to the interesting facet of the island. The
current tourism status in Pamilacan Island in Bohol is a mixed bag. On
one hand, the island has seen a significant increase in tourist arrivals
in recent years, thanks to its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters,
and rich marine life. The island's unique selling point, the "Pamilacan
Island Tour," which offers a guided tour of the island's coastline,
snorkeling, and dolphin-watching opportunities, has been a major
draw for tourists.

On the other hand, the island's infrastructure has struggled to keep
up with the influx of tourists. The island's only resort, the Pamilacan
Island Resort, has been fully booked during peak season, leaving
many tourists with limited accommodation options. Additionally,
the island's waste management system has been overwhelmed by
the sheer volume of tourists, leading to concerns about
environmental sustainability. To address these challenges, the local
government has implemented measures to regulate tourism and
ensure sustainable development. These measures include
implementing a tourist fee, which will be used to fund infrastructure
development and environmental protection initiatives. The
government has also launched a campaign to promote responsible
tourism practices among visitors, such as proper waste disposal and
respect for the island's natural resources.
