LEAST-LEARNED COMPETENCY:
Compose clear and coherent sentences using appropriate
grammatical structures: subject-verb agreement (EN5G-IIa-3.9)
OBJECTIVES:
A. Identify the correct form of the verb that agrees with
the subject;
B. Construct sentences using the correct subject-verb agreement;
and
C. Follow the ten basic rules of subject-verb agreement.
LESSON OVERVIEW:
THE SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT
Subject-Verb Agreement refers to the relationship between the subject and
predicate of the sentence. Subjects and verbs must always agree in two ways:
tense and number. For this learning episode, we are focusing on numbers, or
whether the subject and verb are singular or plural.
Ten (10) Basic Rules of Subject-Verb Agreement:
1. Singular subjects require singular verbs, while plural subjects require plural
verbs.
Examples:
Singular subject – singular verb: He is an engineer.
Plural subject – plural verb: They are engineers.
Exemption to the rule:
The pronouns “I” and “You” follow a different rule.
Examples:
I walk along San Agustin Town Square.
You visit the Panugmakan Falls in Janipaan.
2. Compound subjects connected by “and”, use a plural verb.
Example:
Ben and Jane are transferring to another school.
3
3. Consider the subject closer to the verb of two or more subjects joined by “or”
or “nor”.
Example:
Either her parents or her teacher helps a lot.
4. If there is a phrase that comes between the subject and the verb,
consider the subject and not the noun or pronoun in the phrase.
Example:
The teacher as well as her pupils perform a dance.
5. Each, each one, either, neither, everyone, everybody, anybody,
anyone, nobody, somebody, someone, no one; these are all
singular and requires a singular verb.
Example:
Somebody loves to go to Britania Island.
6. Words such as Mathematics, Measles, Physics, News, and or nouns
that end with -s but are not considered plural, requires a singular
verb.
Example:
Mathematics is a difficult subject.
7. Words such as scissors, tweezers, trousers, shears, and the like are
always considered plural.
Example:
My shorts are made of pure cotton.
8. The word "here" and "there" are not subjects. When the sentence
starts with these words, the subject is placed after the verb.
Examples:
Here is my jacket.
There is a star.
Here are my jackets.
There are stars.
9. If subject begins with – all of, some of, most of, half of, none of, a lot of, lots of
-, verb depends on noun after “of”. If it is singular noun, we use singular verb. If
plural noun, then plural verb.
Example:
Some of his projects are fabulous.
10. Team, committee, class, family, and the like are collective
nouns. In considering collective nouns as either singular or plural,
you have to analyze how the verbs are used.
Example:
The troop of monkeys is running.
The troop of monkeys are doing various fun activities
