Activity 2: Name it! Direction: Give at least 5 zodiac signs including the month where it can be seen. ZODIAC SIGNS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. MONTH Guide Questions: 1.What are the animals or objects associated to zodiac signs? 2.What zodiac sign is represented by the water and covers the dates from January 21 to February 19? 3.What sign of the zodiac is known as 'The Twins'? Zodiacal and Seasonal Constellations Prepared by: Mark Anthony B. Limbo Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to: 1. Observe that the position of a constellation changes in the course of a night; and 2. Show which constellation may be observed at different times of the year using models. CONSTELLATIONS A constellation is a group of stars in the sky that forms a pattern and has a name. For example, the stars on the right are nicknamed the Big Dipper because they look like a ladle! Sagittarius THE ZODIAC • A band of constellations found along the eliptic • Orginally contained 1 2 signs or “houses” • The sun resides in each constellation for approximately one month. Capricorn Scorpio Aquarius Libra Pisces Virgo Le o Aries Cancer Taurus Gemini Sagittarius Capricorn Scorpio Aquarius Libra Pisces Virgo Le o Aries Cancer Taurus Gemini HOROSCOPE • A prediction made based on the position of the sun, moon, and planets • A chart or diagram showing the position of celestial bodies and interpreted for their influence over human events EAST Seasonal Constellation • Constellations that can only be seen during specific time of the year, Sagittarius Capricorn Scorpio Aquarius Libra Pisces Virgo Le o Aries Cancer Taurus Gemini EARTH'S REVOLUTION Just as the Moon orbits the Earth, the Earth orbits the Sun. It takes the Earth around 365 days to orbit the Sun, which is why our calendar year is 365 days long. Earth's orbit also affects how we view constellations. Sagittarius ANNUAL MOTION Throughout the year, constellations gradually shift West due to Earth's revolution around the Sun. This is called annual motion. Since the Earth faces a different direction each season, some constellations are only visible during certain times of the year. Capricorn Scorpio Aquarius Libra Pisces Virgo Le o Aries Cancer Taurus Gemini THE VIEW FROM EARTH 12:0o AM 6:oo PM E 6:0o AM W EARTH'S ROTATION The Earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours, which is why our day/night cycle is 24 hours long. Earth's rotation impacts how we view constellations. Which zodiac constellation is the sun 'in' on the diagram to the right and, given that the Sun is in Aries for most of April, what month is it on Earth? Constellation Seen on Different Months of the Year SEASONAL CONSTELLATION Winter Constellations • are best seen in December, January, and February. • Orion, Canis Major, Gemini, Taurus, and Eridanus, Spring Constellation • are those that are seen during March, April, and May. • Leo, Cancer, Bootes, Aquarius , Virgo SEASONAL CONSTELLATION Summer Constellations • are best observed in the months of June, July, and August. • Scorpius, Sagittarius, Cetus, and Eridanus Autumn Constellations • observed during September, October, and November • Stars of Andromeda, Perseus, Pegasus, Pisces Ancient Uses of Constellations. Prepare by: Mark Anthony B. Limbo USES OF CONSTELLATION 1. Many cultures believed that the position of the stars were their God’s way of telling stories. So it seemed natural to recognize patterns in the sky, give them names, and tell stories about them. 2. Before the calendars people had no way of determining when to sow or harvest except by looking at these patterns in the sky. 3. The constellations helped in navigation and aided sailors to travel across the oceans by finding the Polaris or North star and estimating its height to figure out the north and south latitude. BALATIK • The word “Balatik” is the equivalent of the Orion constellation which resembles a “hunting trap” and was often used by our natives to foretell the beginning of “kaingin” (slash and burn) period and time for planting. MOROPORO • was used for sea navigation and to signal the beginning of the planting season 2.
