Listening Skills
This assessment tests your ability to understand spoken English by answering questions after listening
to audio clips. NOTE: You need good speakers
or headphones to complete this assessment.
Read the question and click this button to
listen to the audio clip. Use the information
in the audio clip to select the best answer.
You can only listen to the audio clip once.
Use the navigation bar to take you from
question to question.
Your test results are available immediately.
You can take this assessment five times,
but you must wait at least two weeks to
test again.
Speaking Skills
This assessment tests your ability to communicate in spoken English by recording your verbal responses
to questions. NOTE: You need a good microphone to complete this assessment. It may already be built
into your computer.
Instructions:
Step 1: Make sure you have a good microphone and a quiet space to record your answer.
Step 2: Select one (1) topic from the list of topics at the bottom of the page.
Step 3: Organize your thoughts and ideas and prepare a written script with between 180 - 240
words using your own content. Do not take ideas or copy directly from other sources, such as the
internet. To get a high score, your answer should include:
•
•
•
•
•
An introduction that outlines the topic (in your own words) and your opinion.
One reason for your opinion, with supporting details.
A second reason for your opinion, with supporting details.
A third reason for your opinion. This should be the most important one.
A conclusion that restates your opinion and summarizes your reasons.
7|Page
(Do NOT refresh your browser or log out when you are preparing your script, as you may get a
different question.)
Step 4: Click the 'Start Recording' button and read your written script.
Step 5: Listen to your audio clip after you are done.
•
•
If you are not happy with
it, click the redo button
and re-record your
answer.
If you are happy with
it, click the
'Submit' button and
watch for messages while
your assessment is being
scored. If your recording
is too short or the quality
of the recording is too low, you will see a message asking you to try again. If it's okay, your
answer will be scored. This could take two minutes or longer. Do not exit until your
assessment is marked.
Step 6: Return to your home page after your assessment has been marked.
Writing Skills
This assessment tests your ability to communicate in written English by writing a short essay.
Instructions:
Step 1: Read the writing topic at the top of the page.
Step 2: Spend a few minutes organizing your thoughts before you begin writing.
Step 3: Write a five-paragraph essay explaining your opinion on the topic. Use the text box
provided.
For a high-scoring essay, you must provide at least three reasons for your opinion. For each, use
supporting details, examples, facts and/or personal experiences to support your position.
Your essay should be five paragraphs long:
8|Page
•
•
•
•
•
Paragraph 1 – An introductory paragraph that outlines the topic or issue (in your own
words), your position or opinion (e.g. whether you are for or against the statement) and a
hook (a question, a fact, a quote or something else to grab the audience’s attention).
Paragraph 2 – A body paragraph that explains one reason for your argument, with
supporting details.
Paragraph 3 – A body paragraph that explains the second reason for your argument, with
supporting details.
Paragraph 4 – A body paragraph that explains the third reason for your argument. This
should be the most important one.
Paragraph 5 – A concluding paragraph that restates your opinion, your reasons, and what
your audience should do next.
Please do not plagiarize - i.e. do not copy text from the internet or other sources.
If you write fewer than 120 words, there is not enough text to evaluate. You will be asked to try
again. For a high score, aim for approximately 300 words or more.
Step 4: Click the 'Submit' button once you are done. Wait for further instructions.
Step 5: Click OK if your answer is long enough and go to MY Assessments page to review your
score and take other assessments.
How to view your assessment results
You get a result report each time you take an assessment. It is available immediately.
In the Results column, click the View button. (If there is an empty date field, it means you haven’t taken
that assessment yet).
9|Page
The report lists:
• the type of assessment you took
(e.g. reading)
• your first and last name
• the date you took the
assessment.
•
Two scores:
o
A score in the form of a level
(e.g. Intermediate Level 1).
o
A number score found in
brackets (e.g. 223). This score
is based on the International
Adult Literacy Survey (IALS)
500-point scale.
The report also provides information
about the type of reading tasks you
can likely do.
The last section of the report
provides information about how
your scores might correspond to the
test and scale of other assessments.
These are general comparisons and we do not guarantee a score on other tests or in other evaluations

How to see and use your learning plan

assessment. In the Learning column, click the View button.
11 | P a g e

Your customized learning plan will appear
in a separate screen.
It lists free online learning resources that
you can use to quickly and efficiently build
the skills you need. Your plan focuses only
on the skills you need to build, not the
ones you already have.
To open a link, click on the website
address. It takes you directly to the
lesson, which you complete at your own
pace. The website program does not
monitor your progress.
To print your learning plan, click the Print
