Today I will be able to:
- Explain how one rock can turn into another
- Describe the conditions needed for sedimentary and metamorphic rock
to be created.
- Decide what type of rock something is based on a description of how it
was formed

We learnt about igneous rocks two lessons ago. There are intrusive and extrusive
rocks.
Where are intrusive rocks like Granite made?
1) Inside the earth
2) At the bottom of the sea
3) At the top of mountains

The other type of igneous rock is extrusive. It's made
of the same stuff – liquid rock from inside the earth.
But where is extrusive rock like Basalt made?
3) At the bottom of the sea

Metamorphic rocks literally MORPH into something else. To do that, it needs a
lot of heat, and a lot of pressure.
What does the word pressure mean? Talk to your partner!
Write down what happens when something is under pressure

Key words: sedimentary, igneous, metamorphic, heat,

To make metamorphic rock, it must be very
hot, but not too hot! If it melts back into
magma, then it will become an igneous rock!
It must be at least 200 degrees and 300 Mega
Pascals. That's the same temperature as the
food cooking in the oven – so nowhere near as
hot as a volcano, but 300MPas is a HUGE
amount of pressure!

Key words: sedimentary, igneous, metamorphic, heat,
pressure
Sedimentary rocks are made of fragments of other rocks that have grouped together
under lots of pressure and form as layers.
The deeper the layer, the older the rock usually is.
Normally this happens at the bottom of the sea or very deep lakes.

• Sedimentary rocks form from bits of sediment that collect at the bottom of the sea and are
squashed together. We call this Compaction and cementation.
• Sedimentary rocks often contain the remains of living things called fossils

I've made some Who Am I? Puzzles for you to figure out. You can work on
them in your pairs, but then make sure to write the answers in your books.
Write the clue as well as the answer so we can check them later on.
The possible answers are at the top of your sheet.
Here's an example: My name is granite. I was made below the earth’s
surface and contain very large crystals.
