What is digestion? Digestion is the process by which digestive system breaks down food into tiny particles , which is absorbed by the body for energy, growth, and cell repair. Organs of digestive system 1.Tongue 2.Salivary glands 3.Oesophagus 4. Stomach 5.Large intestine 6.Small intestine Mouth What do you think is the function of teeth while eating? Our teeth chew and chop up the food into smaller pieces that we can swallow. Do you know why are we asked to chew well before swallowing? Digestion starts in the mouth. Saliva makes the food moist which also makes swallowing easy. Digestive juices in saliva start to digest the food. What are digestive juices? Juices secreted by organs like mouth (saliva), liver and pancreas that help in breaking down the food further. Oesophagus: (Pronunciation: ee·saw·fuh·guhs) The food we swallow is pushed down a tube called the oesophagus and into the stomach. (also called food pipe) The muscles of the oesophagus contract to squeeze and push the food downwards. Stomach: Inside the stomach the food mixes with digestive juices that turn the food into a thick liquid similar to porridge. Small intestine: The small intestine also produces digestive juices breaks down the food even more until the food particles are small enough to move into the blood. Large intestine: Any undigested bits of food that our body can’t use move into the large intestine. The large intestine also absorbs water and some substances into blood. Anus: The solid undigested food bits are pushed out of the body as waste. (Pronunciation: ay·nuhs)
