J D What are the Effects of CHAT GPT on our Mental Capabilities as Students? Blogs First of all, let me tell and elaborate on what CHAT GPT is and how it works. Chat GPT stands for Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer and was developed by OpenAl, an AI research company. It is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot technology that can process our natural human language and generate a response. Simply put and type your question to Chat GPT, and it will give you an immediate answer. Since its official release on November 20, 2023, it has become viral and commonly used by students. I remember using it for the first time during the 4th quarter of my 11th grade. I tried it because my classmate told and recommended it to me, to try using it since I was having a hard time making a long 12-stanza poem for our performance task in school. Since then, I started to use Chat GPT as a brainstorming partner, a creative collaborator, or a problem-solver. The ability of Chat GPT to generate human-like answers through chat has amazed and fascinated me. This started a debate about whether it is truly beneficial for the mental capabilities of students or not – because we are starting to be too reliant on it. Chat GPT provides us with instant access to information on various topics and subjects. It makes learning more interactive and engaging for students. It can also expose students to different perspectives and styles of learning. But behind these benefits are limitations that affect students negatively. Chat GPT is not always reliable in providing information, it raises some ethical issues and dilemmas that students need to be aware of and responsible for, and foremost- it may cause addiction or obsession among students who use it excessively or compulsively, this may “spoon-fed” them which will degrade their creativity and thinking skills since they become too reliant on the software and not on their own learning and capabilities. I’ll use “us” instead. So, us students should give solutions to these “cons” to maximize the benefits and minimize the drawbacks while using Chat GPT. We must always keep in mind that Chat GPT is a helpful academic companion for us students but not a replacement for our own mental capability, creativity, and thinking skills.
