The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the Schools Division of Roxas City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents, and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum. The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and employment. For learning facilitator: The Research 7 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and the learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning. For the learner: The Research 7 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule. iii Downloaded by Pikit NHS North Cotabato (304494@deped.gov.ph) lOMoARcPSD|29541242 Name: ____________________________________________________________________ Grade and Section: ______________________________Date: ___________________ RESEARCH 7 ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 1 Scientific Attitudes I. Learning Competency with Code o Recognize and show scientific attitudes. (SSP-RS7SA-Ia-c-1) II. Background Information for Learners Have you ever wondered how plants grow? Why birds fly, how it happens and the reason behind it? Your reactions toward the things happening around that trigger you to ask, observe, and find answers can be attributed to your attitude. Scientific attitude can be defined as a way of looking into things that are governed by facts and truth that are known. For example, you want to know how a certain plant grows, therefore, you observed it well and went to the library to search and read some information about how that plant grows. And you can even conduct an experiment to gather vital information about it. The attitude you exhibited or the ways you do in knowing the information about how a plant grows are examples of scientific attitudes. To deepen your understanding about the scientific attitudes, do the succeeding activities. III. Activity Proper Activity 1. Recognizing Scientific Attitudes Directions: Read and understand the given situation/ problem and answer the questions that follow in a separate sheet of paper. While sitting on a chair near the garden, Emil has noticed that a rose plant is looking dry and about to die under an old garden house. He wondered why the rose plant is dying when other rose plants outside the old garden house are all blooming well. Being curious of what he noticed and wanted to know the reasons behind it, Emil asked his Science teacher, Mr. Delos Reyes. Mr. Delos Reyes told him that it may be due to lack of sunlight that is why the rose withered. Emil is still confused about it. So, Mr. Delos Reyes asked Emil to conduct a simple experiment on the effect of sunlight exposure to plants. Due to his curiosity, he followed Mr. Delos Reyes’ advice with willingness and open mindedness. As he started his experiment, he used 2 setups, a month-old rose planted in a medium size can with humus soil, and watered daily with 1 cup of water, wherein setup 1 is exposed to sunlight for 3 weeks. Set up 2: the controlled group which is not exposed to sunlight for 3 weeks as instructed by 1 Downloaded by Pikit NHS North Cotabato (304494@deped.gov.ph) lOMoARcPSD|29541242 Mr. Delos Reyes. Emil willingly accepted all the help and ideas of Mr. Delos Reyes. With his critical thinking skill, he evaluated any evidence to know the reason why the rose is dying. He examined the plants in both setups and described the effects in terms of plant height, number of leaves, and leaf color. As he recorded every observation during the conduct of his experiment, he was honest and truthful while gathering the needed data for he never changed or manipulated any evidence that he had gathered. The experiment lasted several weeks, Emil encountered many difficulties and failure, but he did not give up. With his perseverance, he successfully finished his experiment and concluded that the sunlight plays an important role in the growth and development of the plant which was the reason why the rose under the old garden house is dying while those roses that are exposed to sunlight bloom well. Guide Questions: Q1. What triggers Emil to ask Mr. Delos Reyes about the reason why the rose under the old garden house died? ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ Q2. What attitude/s did Emil exhibit as Mr. Delos Reyes challenged him to do a simple experiment? ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ Q3. What attitude did Emil show when he gathered data during the conduct of his experiment? ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ Q4. What attitude helped Emil to succeed in his experiment? ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ Q5. Did Emil exhibit honesty and truthfulness while conducting his experiment? Cite the specific examples? ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ As you performed the first activity, you have recognized the following scientific attitudes: 1. Curiosity. It is an ability to wonder or ask questions to know what a particular thing is all about, what it is for, the reason for something and how it is done. 2. Open Mindedness. It is the acceptance of ideas from others and considers these ideas as potentials that can help in doing any work. 2 Downloaded by Pikit NHS North Cotabato (304494@deped.gov.ph) lOMoARcPSD|29541242 3. Critical Thinking. It is an attitude of an individual that is willing to evaluate any evidence that is presented to support a certain conclusion. 4. Intellectual honesty. It is an attitude where one should be truthful in gathering data during experiments. 5. Perseverance. It is a continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. Activity 2. Showing Scientific Attitudes Directions: Present an example/situation in your life where you have shown/exhibited the following scientific attitudes. Check the given example for reference. Example: Scientific Attitudes 1. Curiosity 2. Open- mindedness 3. Critical thinking 4. Intellectual Honesty 5. Perseverance Example/Situation Why do I have pimples? I have followed Mom’s advice to always wash my face. I willingly evaluated some pieces of evidence from the internet if washing my face can really help lessen my pimples. I never changed the observations I have gathered and told my friends on the effect of washing my face regularly. I never give up on taking care of my face and because of that, I don’t have pimples anymore. Example/Situation Scientific Attitudes 1. Curiosity 2. Open- mindedness 3. Critical thinking 4. Intellectual Honesty 5.
