There are three (3) major parts of the respiratory system:
the air pathway,
the lungs, and
the muscles of respiration.
The air pathway consists of the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea,
bronchi, and bronchioles.
The lungs serve as the storage area for oxygen and carbon dioxide.
The muscles of respiration are the diaphragm and intercostal
muscles. Both muscles work together to act as a pump that pushes air into
and out of the lungs during breathing.
We will study each of the major parts of the respiratory system in
the next learning activities.
