College life gives students a chance to adapt to the society. It gives students a chance to change
themselves to become better.
In the passage ”As a freshman, You Can’t Avoid Reinvention”, Meera Navlakha talks about her
own perspective of effect of collage to students. Before she starts her college life, she doesn’t
want to change at all. However, when she starts to go to college, she realizes that due to the
different background, it is impossible to avoid reinvention. She points out that ”When I arrived,
for example, I was painfully aware of my background and race because of the predominantly
white population around me”. The environment she lives changed a lot since she went to college.
She has to adapt to her environment and confronting parts of herself she did not realize were
there.
From my perspective, considering my personal experience, I agree with Meera Navlakha’s idea
that students can not avoid reinvention during college. Without doubt, students will affect by the
different background by college. People’s personality can be modified by the people who appear
in their life. In the college, the new background forces students to make a change. Students will
leave their home and go to a new city or even a new country, so they loss their friend in
hometown and help from their parents. They need to make new friends and become more
self-independent in their college life. Take me as an example, when I came to UC Davis, I found
that everything I know about daily life change. People speak the different language and eat
different type of food. Without the help from parents, I need to clean up my room and cook
dinner for me by myself. I need to become self-independent in order to take care about me in
foreign country. Also, non of my friends study at UC Davis so I need to make new friends.
However, I am always why so I afraid to talk to stranger. I need to forces me to change my
character and talk to stranger so that I can make new friends. Also, because of the language
barrier, I need to practise much harder than before. I did not care about my English pronunciation
before. However, when I realize that some times my partner can not understand my accent, I
forces me to get up earlier and practise my speaking. It’s very hard, but after doing that I found
that it is worth to do. All the change which I make is in order to adapt new college life.
All in all, in the passage ”As a freshman, You Can’t Avoid Reinvention”, Meera Navlakha talks
about her own perspective of effect of collage to students and points out that students can not
avoid reinvention during their college life. Form my perspective, considering my personal
experience, I agree with Meera Navlakha’s idea. Because of the change of environment of
students, students need to reinvent themselves in order to live in a new environment.
