Writing an Article
As a minimum, you should include:
 the use of a simple title
 paragraphs.
More detailed/developed indicators of form
could include:
 a clear/apt/original title
 a strapline
 subheadings
 an introductory (overview) paragraph
 effectively/fluently sequenced paragraphs.
A Title
On your tables, come up with one ‘simple’ title and one ‘apt’ or
‘original’ title for the following:
‘People have become obsessed with travelling ever further and faster.
However, travel is expensive, dangerous, damaging and a foolish waste
of time!’
Write an article for a news website in which you argue your point of
view on this statement.
On your tables, work out where the paragraphs should be in this section of an
article.
Sticking closer to home because of COVID-19 has shown many people what cities can be like with
less traffic, noise, congestion and pollution. Roads and parking lots devoted to cars take up a lot of
land. For example, in Phoenix, Los Angeles and New York City these spaces account for over onethird of each city’s total area. When stay-at-home orders went into effect in many parts of the U.S. in
March, streets and parking lots went dormant seemingly overnight. Within days, municipalities across
the U.S. started shifting these spaces to other uses that better suit people. As a professor of
environmental design and transport, I’ve worked for decades to unravel the many factors that keep
people reliant on cars, SUVs and trucks. Weather, time constraints, children – there are many reasons
that prevent people from using transportation modes like bicycles. Yet with a simple first step –
starting to reconfigure city streets – meaningful change can begin to break down traditional
transportation barriers and usher in a new culture of getting around town by means other than cars.

Using an effective strapline
A strapline is a headline written beneath the main headline. It is written in a point
size that is smaller than the point size used to write the main headline, and is
generally used to highlight a new point.
Come up with an effective title and strapline for this article.

Subheadings
About great white sharks
While the shark in Jaws was inspired by a great white shark in New Jersey, the legendary fish is far less fearsome in reality. As
scientific research on these elusive predators increases, their image as mindless killing machines is beginning to fade.
Found in cool, coastal waters around the world, great whites are the largest predatory fish on Earth. They grow to an average
of 15 feet in length, though specimens exceeding 20 feet and weighing up to 5,000 pounds have been recorded.
They have slate-grey upper bodies to blend in with the rocky coastal sea floor, but they get their name from their white
underbellies. They're streamlined, torpedo-shaped swimmers with powerful tails that can propel them through the water at
speeds of up to 15 miles per hour.
Hunting and diet
Highly adapted predators, their mouths are lined with up to 300 serrated, triangular teeth arranged in several rows, and they
have an exceptional sense of smell to detect prey. They even have organs that can sense the tiny electromagnetic fields
generated by animals.
Shark attacks
Of the 100-plus annual shark attacks worldwide, a third to a half are attributed to great white sharks. Most of these,
however, are not fatal. Research finds that great whites, which are naturally curious, often "sample bite" then release their
human target.
Population and conservation
There is no reliable population data for the great white shark, but scientists agree that their number are decreasing
precipitously. Overfishing and getting accidentally caught in fishing nets are their two biggest threats.
Introductory/overview paragraph
‘While the shark in Jaws was inspired by a great white shark in New
Jersey, the legendary fish is far less fearsome in reality. As scientific
research on these elusive predators increases, their image as mindless
killing machines is beginning to fade.’
This paragraph introduces the topic to the reader (sharks) through a relatable
reference (the film Jaws) and hints at the focus of the article (that we should not
view sharks as villains).
Write an introductory paragraph for the
following article.
‘All sport should be fun, fair and open to everyone. These days, sport
seems to be more about money, corruption and winning at any cost.’
Write an article for a newspaper in which you explain your point of
view on this statement.
Fluently sequenced paragraphs
Having interviewed a diverse group of young German and British women for my
research, I found associations of the term "feminism" with man-hating, lesbianism
or lack of femininity was a key factor in rejections of the label "feminist".
The majority said they did not want to call themselves feminist because they feared
they would be associated with these traits. This was despite many stressing they
were not homophobic and some identifying as lesbian or bisexual.
So, how could the image of feminism be improved?
Arguably, as a society we should do more to challenge narrowly defined
expectations of how women should look and act.
Working harder to make this movement more inclusive could mean that feminism
speaks to the experiences and concerns of diverse groups of women.
Nevertheless, whichever label women choose to adopt, the indication that the vast
majority of people now support equality - and acknowledge it has not yet been
achieved - is heartening.
