OkonkwoandKillmongerareraisedinanimpoverishedareainwhichtheysufferfrom
oppressionbuttheyovercomethisthroughtheirintellectandstrength.InbothAchebe’sThings
FallApart,thetragicheroes,OkonkwoandKillmonger,trytofixinjusticeswithintheirsocieties,
especiallytheoppressionoftheirpeople.However,theirtragicflawsofexcessiveprideand
ambitionsforpowerpreventthemfromachievingtheirgoalswhichultimatelyleadtotheir
downfall.
BothOkonkwoandKillmongerstrivetoconfronttheoppressionpresentintheirsocieties
bychallengingthesocietalstateandseekingpowertoenactchange.InThingsFallApart,
Okonkwo’sactionsaredrivenbyhisdesiretobeunlikehisfatherwhileupholdingIgbotraditions
duringWesterncolonialism.AchebewritesthatOkonkwowasverygrievedwhenhesawhis
clanbreakingupandfallingapart.Okonkwo,here,istryingtocombattheinequalitiesbrought
bycolonialismbypreservingthetraditionsofhistribe.Similarly,in“BlackPanther”,Killmonger
seekstouseWakanda’smagicalelementtoempoweroppressedneighborhoodsglobally.This
depictsthespiritoftryingtoupliftmarginalizedgroupsfromKillmonger.BothKillmongerand
Okonkwotrytobattlemarginalizationbyrisingtopower.However,thiswillrevealtheirtragic
flaws,whichwillultimatelyleadtotheirdownfall.
EventhoughOkonkwoandKillmongertriedtoconfrontoppression,bothstruggledwith
adaptingtoculturalchangewhichrevealedtheirtragicflawswhichcontributedtotheirdownfall.
