Environment and Infrastructure Management Solution (EIMS) Limited © 2023 EIMS Limited REPORT | DETAIL ENGINEERING ASSESSMENT 1 INTRODUCTION The 2-Storied Main Production Building is the production building of DEKKO Garments Limited as a part of DEKKO-ISHO Group. The building is located at Noyanpura Bazar Road, Mawna Union, Gazipur, Bangladesh. The authority of DEKKO Garments Limited engaged Environment and Infrastructure Management Solution (EIMS) Limited for performing Detail Engineering Assessment (DEA) of the building. In this regard, a technical team comprising of two (02) members was formed by EIMS management to carry out the work. DEA was performed considering the as-built condition of the building. This report manifests the structural analysis & structural member’s adequacy considering the Bangladesh National Building Code (2006) code, specified live loads as per current occupancy levels by the factory management. Density of construction materials considered based on the aggregate types and existing superimposed dead loads. The overall analysis has been performed according to Bangladesh National Building Code (2006) to consider seismic forces based on defined soil conditions and wind loads as per defined exposure category. Concrete cores were collected to evaluate equivalent concrete strength (As per ACI-562) for structural members only. The equivalent core strength is 4,243 psi following core test report and existing rebar yield strength is considered 60,000 psi. The structural and architectural drawings were verified by quick-scanning, physical inspection, and dimensions measurement, etc. Foundation was checked using the information available in the sub-soil investigation report. The summary of the outcomes and recommendations are illustrated in following section of this report. BUILDING INFORMATION The building is a RCC intermediate moment resisting frame with steel roof truss. The general building information written in Table 2.1. Yield strength of steel deformed bar mentioned 𝑓𝑦 = 60,000 𝑝𝑠𝑖 (flexural) for rebar as per the structural drawings. SCOPE OF WORKS The general objectives of this assessment are to identify the major structural deficiencies by doing the linear structural analysis with respect to the existing building information such as construction drawings, information of construction material strength and analysis according to building code, earthquake load based on the ground motion. To conduce this assessment the scope of works is mentioned belowa) Verification of as-built drawings (architectural and structural parts) b) Concrete core sample collection a total of 10 from ground floor and first floor. c) Detailed Engineering Assessment (DEA) and serviceability checks. d) Remedial measures for infill out of plane failure for masonry walls. SUMMARY OF VISIT During the building visit the physical checking and quick Ferro-scanning of major structural elements were carried out. The pictorial evidences are shown in figures below. In Figure 4.2 the team also found two unrecognized additions which do not have any available documents present. Recommendation about these two additions is given in the Recommendation and conclusion section of this report. Figure 4.3 shows the identification of rebar position and number by Ferroscanning to image creating process. Weight due to floor finish, brick masonry wall and parapet wall act as super dead load. The live loads used for the structural design of floors, roof and the supporting members shall be the greatest applied loads arising from the intended use or occupancy of the building. Or from the stacking of materials and the use of equipment and propping during construction but shall not be less than the minimum design live loads set out by the provisions of this section. The assigned live loads are considered for the building. This is a proposed load plan must be maintained for the structure throughout its life span. 5.6 Lateral loads 5.6.1.1 Wind load (RCC) The minimum design wind load on buildings and components thereof shall be determined based on the velocity of the wind, the shape and size of the building and the terrain exposure condition of the site as set forth by the provisions of this section. Environment and Infrastructure Management Solution (EIMS) Limited © 2023 EIMS Limited REPORT | DETAIL ENGINEERING ASSESSMENT 95 ASCE 41 TIER 1 RECOMMENDATION AND RESPONSE Based on our assessment of the 2-storied building with a grid spacing of 24'-0"x30'-2" and supported with 20"x20" column at the GF, we have found that the factor of safety of the columns are satisfactory with the existing gravity load. The building is classified in the GREEN category. The factory concern has assigned EIMS to address the issue. EIMS has produced the credible as-built drawing and allowable live load plan from the multiple field visit and client provided source drawings, which are provided with this report. DEA has been carried out for Main Production Building. Nine cores from the columns of GF and one core from the beam of 1st floor have been collected and tested. The type of building, in this case, is concrete frame with infill masonry. These are, generally, non-compliant in respect of out-of-plane performance of the infill masonry. The infill masonry is a seismic hazard around the building's perimeter. The recommendation is to mitigate this hazard in those limited locations that will protect egress from the building, including stairwells and building entrances and exits using FRP or by other means to avoid out of plane failures during earthquakes. This shall be achieved within the next three months. Strengthening drawings to mitigate this issue is added in the URM wall retrofitting drawing with location markings at the egress locations. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION After checking the as built condition, the summary of the analysis is written belowa) All RCC columns and slabs are found adequate in capacity according to BNBC 2006. b) All RCC grade beams and floor beams are found adequate in terms of bending and shear capacity. c) Foundation system is adequate in terms of bearing capacity and punching capacity as per provide load plan. d) Torsional irregularity exists as defined in BNBC 2006 table 6.1.4, the effects has been encountered by applying the increased accidental torsion on that level by an amplification factor Ax. e) A total number of 379 steel members (diagonal chord in the truss) are found inadequate in capacity. Additional 2 pipes (114mmX4.8mm) in each column (total 96 pipes) are added for rectification. After retrofitting, the steel members are found adequate. f) The proposed load plan is to be followed strictly. g) The client needs to appoint a load manager and a pertinent load management program. h) The factory must strengthen the infill masonry at the marked location in the URM retrofitting drawing. It is also recommended that the regular maintenance works should be done to keep the building safe as in terms of structural point of view.
