Key weakness of the League of Nations
-the USA refused to join, following a policy of isolation.
damages the prestige and power of the LoN.
-Defeated powers, like Russia and Germany, were not
consulted about the LoN and not invited to join. Russia was
eventually invited to join in 1934.
-Britain and France weren't fully commited to the league, they
did it to keep Wilson happy. they were busy with their empires.
-Many of the LoN's rules were unworkable, like article 8.
-Countries like Japan saw the league as only of benefit to
Britain and France.
-the League had NO ARMY. this meant they couldn't deal with
aggressive states well. their only weapon was trade sanctions
and they didn't really work.
-there was nothing the LoN could do to stop countries from
leaving, e.g, Japan, Italy and Germany just headed out in the
1930's.
