What punctuation do we use when we are writing
direct speech?

Inverted commas
Direct speech is a sentence in which the exact words
that are spoken are recorded using inverted commas.
“Do you have the time?” asked the
stranger outside Gregg’s.
“I can’t wait for my birthday!” exclaimed
Sam.
Rules:
• The spoken words must have inverted commas at
the start and end
• Before the closing inverting commas there must be
another form of punctuation
