Hopi nation/tribe:
The Hopi is the short name of Hopi’sinom means "people living with the correct meaning."
The Hopi Indian tribe is a native American nation located in northern Arizona. The Hopi tribe
migrated from Central America back in 2000 BCE. Currently, the population of the Hopi tribe
is around 12,000-15,000 individuals with a living area of 1.5 million acres, comprising 9% of
the total area that Hopi's had back in the 13th century (HCC, 2022). The Hopi tribe has complex
tales of mythology, culture, and warfare. Initially, the language of Hopi was Uto-Aztecan;
however, the limited individuals of a few tribes adopted English with the passage of cultural
evolution and the introduction of the US government's inclusive ordinance for the tribe.
Prior and post-European contact:
The Hopi tribe initially had a culture of bands and artistic works; however, the tribe adopted
agriculture & farming of maize and cotton with the Spanish infiltration. The tribe had first
European contact with the Spanish in 1540 when the Spanish came to the north region in search
of gold and wealth. The Spanish found the tribes in poor financial conditions; however, they
started exploitation of tribes and converted many of the clans to the catholic religion. In the
18th century, the US government had agreed to acquire the land from the Spanish, and the
agreement resulted in the transfer of lands to US territory; the tribe consistently fought for their
rights. In the 19th century, the US government legislated the preservation of Hopi culture; since
then, the Hopi tribe has lived in a specific area of 1.5 million acres with mud houses located in
Arizona. The post-European contact influenced the way of farming, as Hopi culture is now
indulged in agriculture with modern farming techniques (LFC, 2021). However, the band &
instrumental music culture is still adopted by the tribes. In the modern era, the tribe also does
direct trade and full-time jobs in a limited capacity.
Conclusion:
The Hopi tribe is considered an ancient preserved culture; the government has already
introduced various preservation programs. A few thousand populations live within the
specified area where annual lunar eclipse ceremonies occur, and individuals from across the
US state visit to witness the cultural insights.
