Recall particle model of matter
Stem lab video watching activity:
1. The effect of surface area and particle size on the rate of a chemical reaction.
https://youtu.be/BWN8xVuzuFI?si=lpFpsVMtrIQtCaIO
(Calcium carbonate or marble chips reacts with hydrochloric acid to form water, calcium chloride salt
and carbon dioxide gas. The smaller the size of the calcium carbonate particles, the larger their overall
surface area. The larger the surface area the more contact exists between reactants and the faster the
reaction occurs.)
2. The effect of concentration on reaction rate
https://youtu.be/LEkXQxHtbMM?si=iLruFYltnfq5Yg5j
(A practical demonstration of the effect of concentration on reaction rate |Three vessels containing
sodium thiosulfate, each having a different concentration, are reacted with hydrochloric acid | A
turbidity test, for the presence of the precipitated sulfur, is used as an indicator of reaction rate )
Teacher will help learners to carry out a risk assessment by asking the class questions, such as:
 What are the hazards?
 What is the chance of something going wrong?
 How serious would it be if something did go wrong?
 How can the risk(s) be controlled for this activity?
 How can it be done safely?
 Does the procedure need to be altered?
 Should eye protection be worn?
Show learners the particle model and discuss with learners why the rate of reaction changed when
the concentration and surface area changed. Model to learners using the particle model how:
•
Increasing the concentration introduces more particles of one reactant, increasing the
number of collisions between reactants
•
increasing the surface area of the magnesium changes the available contact between the
reactants, increasing the number of collisions

or practical demonstration by putting a tablet of Vitamin C in normal and warm water
10 MINS
Question will be asked about energy of particles and their collision rate in normal and warm water.
How does it affect reaction rate.
Increasing the temperature means reactants have more energy, increasing the number of collisions.
Written work:
1. Using the particle theory, which of the following correctly explains why a higher temperature
increases the rate of reaction?
 As temperature increases, particles gain more energy resulting in a greater chance of a
successful collision
 As temperature increases, particles gain more energy and more collisions occur
 As temperature increases, particles lose energy resulting in fewer successful collisions
HOT: Predict how increasing the temperature of a reaction will affect its rate, based on the collision
theory.
LOT: What happens to rate of reaction between two substances when the temperature is increased?
Explain your answer.
Plenary:
As a recap teacher will ask some high achievers to tell what have they learnt about rate of reaction and
temperature as a factor affecting it and then struggling students, teacher will ask other students to do
