Abstract This study overviews current research on the role of motivation in taking up English Majorship. Motivation is an important factor for explaining the success or failure of any complex task. In this paper, the researcher defines the term motivation, explains different types of motivation, reviews previous studies about the role of motivation in language learning, mentions conditions of motivation, and finally states key factors of motivation. The review of literature indicated that motivation has an important role in learning English as a foreign or second language successfully. In recent times, English has become the global language and plays an important role for people to communicate and fit into the real world. Learning and using English has become a necessary need of many people, particularly the young generation. Motivation is one of the most significant things in the learning process and it is the driving force behind your will to survive. It should be constantly with you: when you are learning, when you’re managing to keep your emotions in check, when you’re adapting to new challenges and resourcefully taking advantage of the environment. Whatever comes your way, you need to have the inner desire to survive, whether alone or with your loved ones. The aim of this study is to identify the motivation of the BSED English majors in ZSCMST in taking up English Majorship. The researcher has used quantitative approach to design a survey to determine the motivation of the respondents of taking up English major. The research participants are first-year college students and third-year college students taking a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English who are officially enrolled in the Synchronous and Asynchronous class of S.Y 2022-2023. The study is to identify the motivation and gender motivation from first to third year college students using a quantitative survey form to conduct data analysis and the outcome of their learning as an English major’s students at Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology. To conclude, English major students’ LAD has not yet matured due to these challenges, which is in conformance with the theory of Noam Chomsky. The formulated recommendations were based on a general interpretation of students’ motivation and coping strategies and could help the plans of the students, administrator, teachers, parents, and numerous other researchers.
