Material handling
•
The use of a hydraulic jack will ease
the material handling process as it
requires a low amount of effort to
move heavy pallets to and from the
loading areas.
•
Forklift will be used to fetch pallets
from a high place (due to pallets
being placed on top of each other).
Warehouse indicators
• Area of warehouse that is utilized: 460 m²; of which is utilized by pallets: 170.4 m².
• Average storing time for one product/pallet: forklift operator would take a maximum of 15
seconds to pick item from deposit area and place it at the furthest position for storage.
• Loading/unloading time for one product/pallet: employee would take an average of 30
seconds to move items to and from loading/unloading area using hydraulic jack
• Number of staff required: 1 forklift operator per shift; 1 employee to handle
loading/unloading per shift and if simultaneous loading and unloading is needed then an
extra hydraulic jack and employee are needed; 1 warehouse manager/controller.
Costs
• Cost:
• Cost of machinery:
•
•
Price of used forklift: 28.000 €
•
Price of 2 hydraulic jack: 446€
•
Total = 28.446 €
Wages:
•
Forklift operator wage: 4.5 €/hr = 36 €/day
•
Warehouse worker loading/unloading wage: 3.95 €/hr = 31.6 €/day
•
Warehouse manager wage: 8 €/hr = 64 €/day
•
Total wages per month = 2.632 €
Payback period
• We receive 6€ x 460 m² = 2.760 €/month
• Amount of money left after paying for wages = 2.760 € - 2.632 € = 128 €/month
• Payback period to pay for machines = 28.446 € / 128 € = 222 months or 18.5 years.
• Possible solutions:
•
Decrease costs by finding cheaper machinery or renting machinery; find cheaper labor;
increase price of rent.
