Universal Principles Universal Principles The UNIVERSAL PRINCIPLES These are “umbrella” principles that govern and inform the overall application of design in the lives of human beings… “Universal design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design, also called barrier free design or inclusive design” MAIN PRINCIPLES OF UP 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. EQUITABLE USE (same for everyone and appealing to all) FLEXIBILITY IN USE (provides choice, e.g. scissors for left and right handed people) SIMPLE AND INTUITIVE USE (design is easy to understand for everyone) PERCEPTABLE INFORMATION (make the most important information stand out, maximise legibility) TOLERANCE FOR ERROR (safety, minimise hazards) LOW PHYSICAL EFFORT (how much effort is needed, is it comfortable to use?) SIZE AND SPACE FOR APPROACH AND USE (enough space provided for approach, reach, manipulation and use regardless of body size)
