The feast of the New yam was held every year before the harvest, to honor the earth
goddess and the ancestral spirits of the clan.
Yams couldn't be eaten until they have been presented to the gods, like Ani.
Okonkwo didn’t like feasts and would rather prefer working in his farm, than getting over
with a feast that lasted days.
In every Feast of the New Yam, there was a story told of a wealthy man who presented a
mound of yam foo-foo in front of his guests.
Old yams were disposed of on the night before the festival.g
