COURSE DESCRIPTION
An introduction to the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) in
Kurdish, and to the Kurdish culture in order to develop basic communication in the target
language for beginner learners. Enables students to understand basic greetings and routine
phrases; to pick out familiar words and phrases in simple texts; to join in basic
conversations; to be able to talk about daily activities and write simple phrases/sentences.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course aims to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills of students in
Kurdish. The course has a communicative approach. Kurdish culture and everyday life are
the major parts of the course. Students are expected to be able to understand basic greetings
and routine phrases; to pick out familiar words and phrases in simple texts; to join in basic
conversations; to talk about their daily activities and to write simple phrases/sentences
about themselves in present tense.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to develop basic reading,
writing, speaking and the listening ability. They will be able to join in basic conversations,
introduce themselves and talk about their daily activities in present tense.

TEACHING METHODS
Course content will be delivered through the lectures and interactive class activities. The
course has a communicative approach. Several methods/techniques are used in this course:

7. Reading texts; asking questions and writing answers about the text
8. Listening to audio files; asking questions and writing answers about them

ASSESSMENT METHODS
Description
 Whether the homework is done or not will be checked by
the instructor.
 Class attendance is required.
 Please join the session on time.
 Participating in class is more than simply attending class.
You are expected to come to class prepared and to
contribute to discussions and activities.
 In every section, the instructor assesses the students'
interest, participation. At this point, the instructor
evaluates students' sense of responsibility, preparation for
the classes and their participation in activities.
 Please be advised, technical problems are students’
responsibility.
 Speaking exam schedule will be announced later.
 During the speaking exam, various questions will be
asked to the student in spoken form.
 Students should answer the questions in such a way as to
demonstrate sufficient knowledge of Turkish.
 Please be advised, technical problems are students’

 The midterm exam will be held on face to face.
 The students will be assessed in their grammar, reading
and writing skills.
 If a student misses the midterm exam due to health
issues or a valid excuse, she/he has to bring a report from
a health center, hospital or the Dean of Students. Only
then a make-up midterm exam will be arranged.
 Please be advised, technical problems are students’
responsibility.
 The final exam will be held on face to face.
 The students will be assessed in their grammar, reading
and writing skills.
 If a student misses the midterm exam due to health issues
or an important issue, she/he has to bring a report from a

 If a student has to take an Early Exam, it has to be
documented by the student. The early final exam will be
organized and announced by the instructor and students
have to inform the instructor in advance. The exam will
be held in any convenient day and time for the instructor.

COURSE GUIDELINES and EXPECTATIONS:
 Come to class prepared.
 Use a dictionary to look a word up, not the instructor! (No “Google Translate”!)
 Make sure you follow the syllabus, dates of quizzes, etc.
 Behave respectfully toward the fellow students.
OTHER
Only graduate students can audit the class by completing the formal registration process. All
audit students will be expected to participate in written and oral activities, and do the related
assignments given during the course.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
Koç University expects all its students to perform course-related activities in accordance with
the rules set forth in the Student Code of Conduct (http://vpaa.ku.edu.tr/academic/studentcode-ofconduct). Actions considered as academic dishonesty at Koç University include but are
not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, and impersonating. This statements goal is to
draw attention to cheating and plagiarism related actions deemed unacceptable within the
context of Student Code of Conduct:
All
individual assignments must be completed by the student himself/herself, and all team
assignments must be completed by the members of the team, without the aid of other
individuals. If a team member does not contribute to the written documents or participate in
the activities of the team, his/her name should not appear on the work submitted for evaluation.
Plagiarism is defined as borrowing or using someone else’s written statements or ideas without
giving written acknowledgement to the author. Students are encouraged to conduct research
beyond the course material, but they must not use any documents prepared by current or
previous students, or notes prepared by instructors at Koç University or other universities
without properly citing the source. Furthermore, students are expected to adhere to the

to refrain from all forms of unacceptable behaviour during lectures. Failure to adhere to

CLASSROOM CODE OF CONDUCT
Students at Koç University are required to adhere to classroom code of conduct and to refrain
from all forms of unacceptable behaviour during lectures. The activities which are prohibited
in class include and are not limited to:
 Engaging in side conversations.
 Using cell phones and other electronic devices.
 All cell phones should be switched off before entering the lecture room. If you expect a
very important call, please switch your phone to silent mode and let your professor
know in advance that you may receive a call.
 Using laptops for purposes that are not course-related.
 Arriving late or leaving early without the prior permission of the instructor.
 If you have to leave during class for an emergency, please try to minimize the
disruption.
 Reading material, e.g., magazines, newspapers, novels etc., that are not course-related.
 Working on personal activities or the assignments of other courses.
 Interrupting the professor or other students.
 Students should request permission from the instructor before asking questions or
making comments.
 Trashing the classroom.
 Eating and drinking are allowed as long as impact on others is minimized and students
clean up their garbage after class.
